Exclamation Should Microsoft shake in their boots?

Hi all,

Just found this quite interesting article on the BBC news website as to the fact that Japan has just ear-marked 1 billion yen into the developement of a Micro$oft alternative. It is expected to be a open-source initiative.

Quote:
"Japan does not have the intention of rejecting a certain product," a spokesman for Japan's Minister of Trade, Takeo Hiranuma, said.

"However Microsoft Windows dominates everywhere, although people also want to test different products. Therefore it is important to work on alternatives."
Quote:
"The idea is to get existing non-Windows operating systems, such as Linux, to be more broadly used, rather than developing a totally new operating system," said ministry official Takashi Kume.

What is the Japanese government going to do with the money? Japan has a history of frittering money away on pork barrel projects.
Hopefully they will spend this money wisely and actually enhance open source software.

1 billion Yen = about 8.5 million US
I would be more concerned about the Government wanting to sponsor another OS than the amount...

Nice as it sounds - I don't really like the idea of government sponsored software.Would be better for everybody if they just went and bought whatever distro and put it on their computers.

Okay, I'll rephrase. Anti-M$ threads belong in General. Is that better?
