Should I stay, or should I go?

I like to play games and listen to music without a hassle, I like to run programs without much effort, and I like opening files without having to type.

But..I also like learning, and working for my reward, I like having fun, and free software. I wouldent mind using wine to play games...as long as I can play most windows games.

Stay mate, converting to Linux is the best thing i've ever done. I only ever use Windows now to play the latest Windows games. Everything else Linux does so much better.

It's up to you... if it games only, then forget it. I've recommend you a better distro in another thread.... you should not consider Linux as for being only Mandrake, or the looks...

Well, it's all up to you. Just so you know, we've all been there, fighting and learning :). At the end, our boxes kicks any Windows boxes arses...

Yea, I wanna stay too, but..I dont wanna switch from OS, to OS, just to play some games, I want it all in 1 package =/ .

I know of wine, but...can someone give me a list of games wine can play? I mainly play FPS games, like CS, UT, Ghost recon, and AA.

The games you've mention runs under WineX. Here is a list of working games:

You can always make a search here:

WineX is great, and cost less then a game... you'd give it a try...

And there are also a bunch of installers around to run Windows games under Linux natively:

ok, II saw every game I play on that list.

Now...hardware?

e-GeFORCE FX 5200 ($100 gfx card I jsut bought less then a month ago). If my sound and gfx card isnt compatable with linux, im switchen back tomorrow.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/home

and get the drivers for Linux. Most likely, you want this one:

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-5336-pkg1.run

A quick search at this forum will help you getting it to work. It's a breeze to install :)

EDIT: Those drivers are officials ones. You will get surprise with the performance you will get with a great card as yours... trust me :)

I can play the games I like.... I will get the graphics I paid for...Hmm, I dont see a reason not to stay! And with this great forum here, ill be able to get all the support I need...

Finaly, im going to stay :)

Although, I hope all my hardware works right, I am only 15 and my mom has paid about 300 bucks for my new mobo, processor, HD, gfx card and DDR RAM.

Mega Man X 03-11-2004 07:21 AM

Cool, that's the spirit. So, you are only 15 huh?. You'd really proud of yourself trying Linux out :).

Mega Man X 03-11-2004 07:22 AM

I saw on another thread where you said that Linux is running a little slower then Windows. That is also graphics related. Not only games, but X server should run faster with the proper drivers.

Regards!

Hey, thanks.

I have been with computers for a while, I do some coding in VB, made my own full trojan once, and a worm...but the worm died after my friend Jeff's house =p.I figured I would get into Linux, Little did I know it was going to be like this..but as long as it supports my hard ware, and can play my fav FPS games, im cool with it.

By the way, for WineX, I recommend creating a seperate user account just for WineX installations (meaning the games that you install).

Things can get "messy" sometimes with WineX, and it's nicer if it's not effecting your primary user account.

It's one of the nice things about Linux that you can have multiple user accounts, and it make slife easier.

/home/kyle 03-11-2004 07:34 AM

Hmmm, sounds like a good idea, thanks, and im sure ill be getting WineX soon.
