save web page results in a file and a folder. Whats the folder for?

When I save a web page to the computer to look at later it always downloads two files, the file I click on to open and view the page, and a folder with the same name as the file but ending in _files.

When does the folder come into play? It seems I can delete the folder and when I click on the remaining file the page opens just as before, when the folder was still there.

I'm sure I am missing something and just don't know it.

Thanks

Usually any images, css files etc or stored in this folder.

To build on dive's statement: the folder associated with the file includes any images and external CSS or javascript necessary to render the page. If the page contains frames, it would also contain the sub-frame html pages.
