San Jose Mercury-News Reviewer Is Not Impressed with Windows 8.1

I stumbled over this review and thought some folks might find it interesting, as it's not done from a Linux-user's perspective.

Wolverton: Update to Windows 8 doesn't fix basic problems

I saw a Windows 8 computer once, for about 15 minutes. Close as I want to get.

The magazine Micromart made the same point: you can't make an interface that will satisfy PC users and tablet users. It's a pity someone can't get that through to Canonical as well as Microsoft.

This is the Windows 1.x deal all over again.

I will build on that to say that, as far as I am concerned, concluding that your users cannot adjust to different UIs on different types of devices is the same as concluding that your users are stupid.

Nearly all the software you use on nearly all the Linux distros in existence is open source, and its usage is mostly governed by very liberal licenses that allows you to change it in any way you want. That gives you considerably more flexibility than any software from Microsoft.

Or maybe I just didn't get what you were trying to say.

I agree with that...but I think thaqt microsoft and canoncial are trying to play a 'long game'. IMO they think that the PC is dead it just hasnt hit us yet, and in the future end uses will all use mobile devices.

They may be right as regards persons who think of a computer as a fancy television set with waaaay more cool stuff to watch, but, when it comes to doing spreadsheets, composing documents, and writing webpages, anything without a keyboard has a long way to go.

PCs are not going away anytime soon. It's microsoft's fault for thinking that way and making windows 8 act like a tablet on a PC. How naive are the people at Redmond

jamison20000e 07-13-2013 08:20 PM

put 8 in VirtualBox then set d-top effects to explode closing apps now it's Fun :D

TuxAnDroid 07-14-2013 03:16 PM

Yeah that may be fun watching blue screens and black and red screen in 3D
But I gave up windows in a galaxy far, far and away.
