Running a server?

Ok, how hard is it really?
We've been quite happy with our site owner since we signed up a couple of years ago.
Last month, they exchanged hands and the new owner moved a lot of the sites to new servers.
Since then, we've had a lot of "down time" that isn't accounted for (little bits, I'm pretty sure it's traffic related given the times that it happened before).
I'm getting fed up, and I need to vent (also looking for alternatives).

Not hard at all. The hardest part is registering your IP address. Also, you need a high speed connection, to get used to using site management software (or manually editing the site yourself), and need to be able to run your computer 24/7. Any computer will suffice as a server unless you are planning on hosting a large site and expecting tons of traffic.

Any time an environment is going through change there is going to be down time. The amount is totally dependant on the skill and resources of the system admin.
You ought to have some kind of contract or service level agreement with your web host. Are they doing anything to compensate you for down time?
