It seems odd, to me, that you can decide to take a course without knowing anything concrete about it (or be able to find out for yourself...). But, hey: that's just me. Good luck.

You seem to have a very large and active LUG in Bangalore (a massive improvement from when I was there a few years ago - then I was informed that linux was not for GUI users "take your pointy-clicky things away" - no kidding)

Have you tried them?

vivek reddy 04-21-2006 07:02 AM

yes, linux users in bangalore have grown in huge numbers. most of my friends use linux here. we have plans to start our own LUG website and launch our own forums. Lack of time is delaying it, but will let you know when it happens.

so you have been to bangalore. how did you find this beautiful city. any plans of coming here again.

I know that I would love to visit India. It is exciting to see how the computer has brought opportunity to places in the world that other kinds of commerce could never reach. There is still a lot of 'growing up' to do in these business relationships, so that they do not become exploitative as they grow, but it's exciting to see the potential of it.

As for certifications and their study-materials ... I suggest that you use them as a guideline. The actual piece of paper doesn't matter so much. What they represent is: what a group of knowledgeable people considered to be a basic body of knowledge, reasonably complete and self-contained, that one should need to know.

It is still a fact that most of the practical knowledge that people have in this business is largely self-taught. It's the School of Hard Knocks: Experience. But Experience teaches you only what you "stumble into." Experience can have you wallowing through one solution to a problem because you didn't know that another strategy existed; it literally had not occurred to you. The study-materials can reveal these other things to you, giving you a glimpse of a more-complete picture.

If you study these things, and practice them as you do so, then .. the examination itself, the coveted piece of paper, becomes an afterthought. It's merely the period at the end of the sentence.

In a rapidly developing nation such as your own, opportunities will be unusually rich for a time. But it will also be unusually more-important that you really "know your stuff" because your clients won't necessarily be in a strong position to "pay for your mistakes." Fortunately, the Internet brings this information to your door. This very website, for example, is a rich resource.

I followed my wife. She wanted to visit Sai Baba ... but that's not really my cup of tea, so I tried to stay neer the city.

Bangalore was very ... intense. Unfortunately I got quite ill.

OTOH: the hacker culture was very strong, and helpful. They'll probably take over running the country if the govt dosn't wise up. They mostly speak good english, and the ones who don't speak "computer".

Greif - the flashbacks: a taxi ride to the airport ... I told the driver we were in a hurry! The markets - colors, smells ... small children following me around. I did get to go to a wedding ... well, more like, a wedding exploded around me...

thats India Simon. but its much much more than what you have seen in that one visit. its truely a wonderful place to be.

for "sundialsvcs" comments: thanks a lot for your advice. i have been using Linux for quite a long time now. i am confident that the knowledge i have can get me a certification. but i would love to learn more and gain as much knowledge as possible.

i am trying to work on my practical skills in a complex situation and trying to concentrate on my programming skills as well.

anyways, thanks a lot guys, will get back to you guys when i need some more help.
