I need some free sofware Open source if possible to recover linux files from with in windows XP.

Do you know of any good software which could recover lost files. I did not let windows format it, it just deleted it.

Windows probably just rewrote the MBR. You can restore the Linux bootloader by booting with Knoppix or any other live Linux cd/dvd. By chrooting into the Linux system partition it's possible to install the bootloader LILO/GRUB to the drive. You will need to add Windows to the menu yourself.
