rates for creating a website
How much do people charge for creating a website (US)? I need some kind of average or minimum rate per page or per whatever they charge.
Thanks. |

I'm not selling neither buying anything.
Someone wanted me to make a website for him and he wants to pay. But I have no idea how to charge for that, that's all. I just need to know some reasonable rate. If it's still against the rules then please ignore my post. Thanks. |
nono... i just didn't want the thread to degrade to people posting web dev sales links... you ain't doing anything wrong, i'd've just specified your complete question up front...
depends on what you devel. i don't like to do it myself, so i keep my business light, but i charge roughly $75/page w/ $300 min. to make it worth my while... but i don't really charge 'by the page'... basically i just make up the price based upon how much work i think it'll be... the big part is to make sure you're on the same page as the guy whos paying... you need to make sure you're in sync with what they want, and when they want it. they also might want some way of seeing how things are progressing. if this isn't a friend, you'll probably want a contract... |
It varies depending on your audience and the size of the expected traffic but they usually start at $10 to register your domain name and about $20 a month.
|
that's hosting, not creating, though

EDIT: I just read over the rest of the post and just dicovered that my laziness has provided you with a lot of useless info. So to make it short $20/h

Although it's been a few years since I've done HTML I do remember that it isn't a hard languagge to learn and if you have good design software you won't need to know much. If you want more functionality in your site you might also want to learn javascript. |
yeah... sh*t, i'm used to seeing rates @ $100/hr and UP for codeing... shoot, i run $60 for support, and the going rate is $75-$120...
we're like plumbers... |
I really cant see why, web design is so easy.
|
you say that now, but then you do a couple sites... and everybody wants something original, that looks and works better than anyone else's site, and is listed first on google....
it's the creative aspect that people pay for... kinda like buying art, i suppose |
there is so much less creativity and originality in creating a site than for doing "real" art. its just that most people think that a text editor is only good for people who dont have enough money to buy M$ office. they dont realize they can spend 4 or 5 hours and get the whole html thing down, without needing any extra software.
which reminds me, i need to make an autobiography website for my webdesign class. i hate it. the actual html is a piece of cake, and ia havent had any trouble with css so far. but i hate actually creating content. i odnt mind doing logos and all that, but i hate writing about myself. anyway, find out how much money the guy has and price accordingly. :p |

as far as site development goes -- sure, any joe can learn html/css... it's not a full language, just a few keywords to learn, really... but a full, active site -- something a little interactive -- that can get very complex. allright allright, i'm done posting my bits -- we're way off topic anyways... i'll get over myself, and off the soapbox... |
I do some contract web design on the side at times and usually I'll make a base price, depending on what needs to be done, how much work, how much coding and graphic design.. along with the size of the initial site.
And after offering my services, seeing what they need, what I can do, then show them the mock site I make.. etc. From there, if they're interested, I calculate how much the base site they want will cost and anything afterwards the initial base design.. I usually charge $30 an hour. |
I agree that if you are going for a high end database driven shopping site high prices are required. But seeing what some people charge for a couple of pages i think is daft.
Choose a price based on how much they have to spend and how much work you did. Boffy |
