bkeating 06-08-2002 05:35 AM

hrm, guess lq.org disabled image loading :(

acid_kewpie 06-08-2002 05:48 AM

yes. it would slow page loading down and look tacky.

HTML in the forums here most likely will never be enabled.

And yes, I agree with acid, image posting within threads and posts is very tacky, slows down page loading and it would be more of a hassle to edit when members link unwanted, vulgar, offensive, pictures on the site. ;)

bkeating 06-11-2002 09:11 PM

But it's no slower then supplying a link. For tasks like random picture threads, it's be excellent.

www.hardforums.com has img enabled and it works out wonderfully. Not tacky looking at all and theirs 200+ people on th board at any given time.

geoffm33 06-11-2002 09:18 PM

So your telling me that say a page with 25 posts of everyones desktop at roughly 100-200K a pop would load just as fast as a page with just a link to each respective desktop pic?

I agree with the mods, if I want to click on a picture of a frog on the phone in someone's back yard, I'll click the link.

Come on! A little *NIX pr0n never hurt anybody! ;) :D :p

acid_kewpie 06-12-2002 05:29 AM

here's an idea, how about using this site for what it is.. THE best linux forum on the internet, one with no RTFMing, no clique, and NO GIMMICKS. Instead of continually grinding away on your axe here that it doesn't look like your favourite www.l33t-h4x0rzzzzz.ru forum.

thanks geoffm33, nice to know some people get the big picture here.... :)

Jalorathalis 06-13-2002 06:14 AM

not to mention the diehard users that only use command line interfaces with text browsers - how would they see all the pics. it would just stuff them up more, anyhow i prefer functionality over beauty (most cases) in a forum like this, even though i have not been a member for very long and am still new to linux, i quite like this site the way it is.

besides i can never be bothered to follow innane links to pics that i couldn't care less about.

tundra 06-17-2002 09:48 AM

hm? diehard users? ah i certainly don't want to die hard... whatever that may mean...

i stand with acid and jal. it's a linux forum. it's good. pics splayed all over the place is going to make this place look like graffiti murals.

leave 'em as links.

btw bkeating, those pics... aaaaiiiiieeeeeeee!!!

Calum 06-17-2002 09:53 AM

i think the links are fine, no images loading up is the best way to do it. I was a bit disappointed that nobody else posted their weird pictures as well though! i think it's fair to do so since the title of the thread "random image" makes it clear that it's images and that it's not relevant to linux questions as such.

bkeating 06-17-2002 12:57 PM

Yes Yes BUT.... I see the forum as being a community and with that, you need some variation though if everyone here says no no no no no then i guess i will post my humor attempts elsewhere.

Personally I've always found it nice to see 6 serious questions followed by with a "Best fridge under 5 cubic feet?" it just keeps things well grounded. No one forces your to click on the thread. It's even in the 'general' section. so basically, there is no room for me to complain, nor is there any room for you to complain.

k i go now.

finegan 06-17-2002 07:52 PM

Hey I'm not complaining, the first one was funny. I agree about general, whenever I see a topic here having much to do with puters or Linux I consider it a personal mission to get off topic as quickly as possible.

As far as uploading images go, I'm in agreement with Kewp for different reasons, I don't really care about appearance, but this site is growing by leaps and bounds and although the community is an important aspect, so is keeping the machine it runs on from hiccuping twice and dying. In January the post count passed 50k, a week ago it passed 100, and from rate it looks like it'll make 150k before August. That rate of increase is scary. This is already one of the most active linux help sites around and I fear what'll happen when it pops 1/2 a million (by the same math, early 2003 without a post slowdown) without a machine upgrade.

Not to harp on this, but there is that who Contributing members thing.

Oh, keating, cool sig.

Cheers,

Finegan

bkeating 06-17-2002 09:32 PM

:) it's all good. I love you guys (in a geeky, linux sort of way).

That just gave me a reason to be more opposed to an image gallery. Something I definitely don't want to see on this site. Thanks MasterC.

MasterC 06-20-2002 10:34 AM

Sure, no problem, just figured I'd throw a few in on this random image thread

acid_kewpie 06-20-2002 03:20 PM

heh, the numebr of times recently people have tried to show why thier idea is really good and just provided the perfect reason as to why it's not.. :D

bkeating 06-20-2002 04:44 PM

Hey, could be worse, could try to have a 'post pics of your girlfriend' :) Im sure the serious guys here would hate that BUT, who clicked on the thread title? ah? ah? :)
