Pronunciation of directories
 

How do you guys pronounce the /etc and /lib directories. I always said "ee tee see" and "libb", but i've recently heard people pronouncing them as "ett see" and "libe". just wondering how you guys say it.

Well I don't know about the /etc directory but the /lib is infact, short for library (hence "libe").

I myself though tend to call then eee tee see and lib (as if to say the country "lib"ia).

i understand the logic behind "libe" but the /bin directory is short for binary, but we dont call it "bine"

Here, we pronounce /boot "boot".

In America, they pronounce /boot "trunk".

Also, due to the connotations of the word here, the /root directory made my wife suspicious. I sorta explained it to her, but she still thinks its a cover for a porn repository.

i pronounce /etc etcetera... i must be the odd one out, lib i pronounce lib, and bin, bin, usr as user etc etc

That is what I do also.

libe as in libation
bin as in wastebin
etcetera as in we put all kind of things here that we did not know what to do with
var: A term in the Texas dialect meaning a high level of something---eg "he's var smart"
boot: german for boat. Newbies are often all in the same boot---er boat.
usr: contraction of a formal way of addressing people, as in "Usr, are mistaken"
opt: a place where you go by choice--as in he opted for that.
root: where everything grows from--the source of all power--the local deity
sbin: more Texas dialect---eg "sbin nice chatting with you"

As far as I'm concerned, /lib is "slash libe", /etc is "slash etsee", and /usr is "slash user". I don't know about everyone else, but I do say the slashes. I've heard many people say paths assuming people know where slashes go.

I pronouce "bin" as "bine" since it is short for binary. Same logic as "libe" since it is short for library. There may not be an official pronunciation. There is a similar discussion in any book on SQL on how it is pronounced. Half spell out the letters since it is an acronym. The others pronounce it.

And in America, only a "Girly Man" would use the words bonnet or boot for a trunk.

Actually, bonnet means hood.

I tend to pronounce everything as if they are stand-alone words:

bin = bin as in garbage
etc = etcetera
lib = lib as in ad lib
usr = user
...

opt pronounced as word "opt"
usr pronounced as word "user"
home pronounced as word "home"

dev rhymes with lev in word "maglev"
tmp rhymes with temp in word "temperature"

bin rhymes with word "pin"
lib rhymes with word "fib"
proc rhymes with word "rock"
var rhymes with word "far"

etc pronounced as letter "E" + word "tea" + word "sea"
sbin pronounced as letter "S" + word "bin"
