pro or con the 80's? need arguments hihi

well i know that's completely stupid and out of subject.
but still, my girlfriend is doing an debat in her french course and the subject given by the teacher is "pro or con the 80's?". she chose con, thinking it would be easy. but we cant find any reaaaally convincing arguments, except the music and the people's dressing (and hair too).

wo well euh... so if you hate the 1980's, why?

thanks.

hihihi

Lets see... MS Windows was first introduced in '85. That was a big con :p

The 80's were my highschool years and while I didnt hate it, it did feel to me a bit more superficial of a decade than the 70's if that makes any sense. I cant discuss anything about Reaganomics or the economy back then because I was too busy falling asleep in class. LOL!!! All I know is alot of CEO's income rose in the 80's while the income of most American families stayed about the same.

The music wasnt bad. Every decade had their strengths and weaknesses musically and the 80's were no exception. I can laugh at some of the fashion because it was so colorful and it seemed for the first time you had to be wearing the name brand: Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren etc unlike the 70's. And don't get me started to the spandex look. Gulp I had a pair of spandex pants. (dont repeat that!)

It was the decade of big business and the takeover crunch. Companies went from retirement systems to 401k's....The deficit hit record highs(although bush has managed to outdo even that by his herculean efforts to destroy the republic single handedly). The business ethic went from "we're in it together" to, "Hey, I can save a dollar just by firing you!". It was the end of the U.S. car empire. It was the beginning of the lawsuit era, it was the beginning of the plastic surgery craze. There were so many bad things in the 80's that it's kind of hard to choose.

yeah and i think there was kinda stock marker crash, no? i was born in 1985 so i dont remember much of things that happened hihi. that's why its hard to me to find things against the 80's. all i remember were those cool cartoon tv show we had in the morning and the ghostbuster movie.
thanks for helping :)

War

The cold war and the Nuclear poker games that the superpowers played.

Russia invades Afganistan
US invades Grenada and Panama
Argentina invades the Falklands

Hard core Drugs enter the mainstream and gang violence becomes commonplace

Living in the USA was more dangerous than anywhere else in the world Except an actual
Battlefield.

Terrorism against US interests in Europe were commonplace.

Everyone lived in fear of nuclear annihilation.

Ironically we are now more likely to see the use of WMD today then we were then.

Computers were not as useful then as they now are; they had limited functionality and were
very expensive.

this is a funny topic.... I remember when the 70's seemed "bad" (regarding fashion, cars, politics, etc.) - for whatever reason, today they seem "less bad," and the 80's get that label now.

you have to admit stuff like early 80's fashion (think leg warmers, headbands, blazers with the sleeves rolled up) and hair-metal bands are pretty horrible. with the exception of Miami Vice, of course.

I suppose in 2015 the 90's will have the "bad" label instead? :D

Let's not forget Flashdance :D

Québec ? french course ? pro or con the 80's?
worth to hijack this thread .....

pro ---- around 1983 Foucault knew that he would die of AIDS
con ---- but still continued visiting American bath-houses with enough dosage of LSD
pro ---- died on 1984
con ---- french intellectual not willing to mention the true cause of his death

ahhh .....hhh ...... feels better now

PeteBourner 04-16-2005 10:31 AM

As it is a French debate, how about:

con: The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior (http://www.greenpeace.org.au/rainbow...985/intro.html) ;)

yet another pro ------ the west still recognise the "basic rights" of a terrorist

edit :: oops ... mistaken pro for con:p
