Could I take a peek at your config/switches?
I'm using command line to start aterm, mainly because I'm still messing with the settings. But here is my current favorite:

aterm -tr -trsb -tinttype true -sh 35 -fade 75 -fg 15

It's the -fade flag that causes the terminal to dim when it loses focus and the number after it is the % of normal.

Hangdog42, I get this:

Code:
[sohail@thabox ~]$ aterm -tr -trsb -tinttype true -sh 35 -fade 75 -fg 15
aterm: bad option "-fade"
aterm: bad option "75"
Without the "-fade 75" it runs without complaining.

Thanks a lot -

Schatoor, are you sure that you have an up-to-date version of Aterm because the line works a charm for me.

Schatoor, you also might check how you compiled aterm. I'll have to check when I get home, but I think that fade might be one of the options you need to turn on when you run ./configure. I know I didn't do just a ./configure, there were a number of options I enabled.

cool, thanks Hangdog42, it worked after a recompile. You have to pass the argument "--enable-fading" to the configure script.

Those "docapps" are superkaramba themes. Yes, they are transparent. You can download superkaramba at http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/ . After that, you'l need so called "themes". Those are little scripts that describe how a paticular desktop thingie (for lack of a better word) should look like. I always go to kde-look to download a nice theme.
After you have downloaded a theme, run superkaramba. You'l see a window appear where you have several option. Choose to open a theme, Select the theme you have downloaded and you'l see it appear on you KDE desktop. It is nearly always required that you manually edit the theme file (which is just an human readable text file), to make it right for you system setup and to alter the theme according to you wishes. For example, I had to change a line in the theme file so that it correctlly reflected the mountpoint of my windows partitions. And I adjusted the size of the fonts.
This is the superkaramba I use.

Have fun ....

Oops, sorry ambelos. I assume that you are talking about gkrellm. No, it's not transparent. But I did come across gkrellm themes that were transparent though.

Stupid me...
