Question Pointers please re: end goal

Hello, I need some pointers in the mass of info available.
I want to setup my dell inspiron 8000 (ATI rage mobility, pcmcia NIC) as a development machine for php and mySQL websites. Currently I do this online in the UK but would like a standalone Linux partition on my lappie to do this. I already have partition magic and boot magic installed with 2 Win98SE OS's.

What I would appreciate is some pointers on whether the laptop is a good idea for this ( I also have an AMD box available too) and which distribution to go for. Or am i dreaming?:smash:

a laptop install isn't the easiest in linux, but it's possible. i have linux partially running on an inspiron 3800 - but part of the reason that it's not fully running is because i'm building the linux almost from scratch... which i don't recommend to anyone who isn't looking to learn everything they can about linux. check out yor laptop on www.linux-laptop.net - it's on there.

linux is much easier to install on a desktop - but if that's not what you're going for, go ahead and try the laptop with mandrake 8.1 - that should be the easiest install.
