I'm very new to Linux and Open Source Software in general, and I'm trying to move away from all MS programs a little bit at a time.
I use Linux on my server, and eventually I'll move to using it on my desktop also, but right now I use XP for all of my basic desktop needs. Please don't flame me because I still use XP - my wife freaked out when I installed Mozilla and deleted IE, I'm really new to linux and still don't know what I'm doing. While I believe in Linux, I believe in Open Source more.
A quick google listed a whole lot of hits for a program that has yet to even be developed by one of the guys who did work on the lotus program, and Ximian Evolution.
What Open Source replacements are there for Outlook, and what would ya'll recommend? The only requirements are: it would have to run on XP, and I'm trying to use programs that are "free as in freedom" (they must have the basic FSF GNU/Stallman GPL).
Are you referring to outlook express (freebie) or the Outlook that's included in MS Office? If it's for outlook express you could just use the mailer in Netscape/Mozilla. Looks pretty much the same in win/linux.
About two years ago I looked at all of the email programs and chose Sylpheed. I have used it for 2 years and I am completely satisfied with it. I just checked the Sylpheed web page and they say that a Windows version is in progress. When I clicked on the link to the Windows version page, it was in Japanese. Anyway Sylpheed will answer your criteria when it ports to Windows, whenever that will be.

Even though it's not GNU-free Eudora is a powerful and capable, not to mention far more secure, E-mail client for Windows. When Yahoo still offered free POP3 access (dam them for stopping that) I would use Eudora exclusively, and I wouldn't touch Outlook if you paid me. Just my 2 cents.
