open invention network

Can anyone explain to me in English what these chaps are about? Is this a duplication of the work of the free software foundation? I am wondering what the advantages of joining this organisation:-
* as a developer
* a linux user
* a member of the GNU/Linux community

you can register your new innovation/patterns of your Linux software. They will help protecting the patterns and your innovated software.

Its not a duplication work, but OIN will save the pattern which is designed by you. The thing is they are trying to claim the new Linux patterns to them and the new pattern cannot be used in the FOSS. Before publishing the pattern to FOSS OIN will claim the pattern rights.
