On-call pay for system administrators
Hello all -
We are reviewing our compensation plan for our linux system administrators and I'm trying to convince our CEO that we need to offer some kind of pay for on-call duty. I would really appreciate any information on pager pay that any of you receive in your current roles. Do you receive a percentage of your salary? A bonus? An hourly rate? I'm looking for information from employees vs. contractors and would love to know the industry you're in as well. Thanks! Kristin Gibbar Director of Recruiting Adknowledge |
A rate per 8 hours, but it depends on the contract. Plus money for answering a call plus money for attending the office.

as a contractor i general collect a flat fee for X hours of "on call" time with extra money if i have to make a trip to fix things.
the fee will depend on what type of work i will be doing. monitoring, call center, level 1 or 2 tech support, server maintnance, etc... fees very depending on the job. |
Places I worked were, if you were paged and woken up, if it was less than 30 minutes, you bill for a whole 30 minutes. Anything beyond that is actual time spend fixing the issue. So, when you got paged, you hoped it was that 5 minute fix or a bogus non-responsive page that required no action, free money, well except the fact you got woken up.

I never got called out :) One year of free money just for carrying a mobile phone around :D

Salary and the joy of knowing you're just going to suck it up.

Thanks
Thanks everyone for your replies. This helps.
