I'd like to add a counter to that, dunno the original author, though :

"Nothing is too good to be true, if it be consistent with the laws of nature."

I have a distinct feeling this thread is going to spark some kind of argument. Maybe not an all-out flamewar, but even so…

I dunno about anyone else here, but I often get inflamed when I read quotes by famous/noteworthy people that I disagree with. That's probably just another one of my problems, though.

Please feel free to disagree with me, you won't upset me ;-). People have tried very hard to do so before now and failed!

In my my 40 odd years of experience though that one is bang on. I can't count the number of times I have avoided being conned by something by keeping that little nugget in mind.

And it does say "probably".

OK so this one should kick off some argument -

"The only possible sin lies in hurting other people unnecessarily. All other 'sins' are invented nonsense. Hurting yourself isn't sinful, just stupid."

Well, I suppose I should have said that quotes on certain topics that I disagree with tend to upset me, but that one really isn't one of them.

Admittedly though, those issues are starting to go away (I've found other things to worry about ).

So, when would it be necessary to hurt others ? I say don't hurt others at all. If they're talking about punishment, it still doesn't make sense, because then:

Old favorite of mine:

You know, Ted, a person's life is made up of a zillion little experiences. Some, which have no meaning, are insignificant and you forget them. And some that stick with you for the rest of your natural life...

Yep, that's a good one and many should think about it.

Some of my favourite W.Allen's quotes:

How can I believe in God when just last week I got my tongue caught in the roller of an electric typewriter?

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work... I want to achieve it through not dying.

I took a speed reading course and read 'War and Peace' in twenty minutes. It involves Russia.

I was thrown out of college for cheating on the metaphysics exam; I looked into the soul of the boy sitting next to me.

If it turns out that there is a God, I don't think that he's evil. But the worst that you can say about him is that basically he's an underachiever.

Life is full of misery, loneliness, and suffering - and it's all over much too soon.

My education was dismal. I went to a series of schools for mentally disturbed teachers.

"I believe there is something out there watching us. Unfortunately, it's the government."

"Bisexuality immediately doubles your chances for a date on Saturday night."

No one can do that. Some people (for example, less fortunate than you) will be hurt simply by your existence.

@ baldy3105 and Jeebizz- Terry Pratchett quotes, most excellent! Great writer, nice guy as well (I've met him 3 times at boot signings).

@ alan_ri- you can quote songs from "...And Justice For All."? Gah. That album is almosty unlistenable (the bootleg remastered version with a bass level you can actually hear is meant to be much better, one of these days I'd trtack it down and check). I never liked metallica after the went all slow and sludgy, and proved that when they said "We will never be an MTV band, making music videos" was just B.S.

"If fortune feigned a smile, I'd search for hairline cracks"- Porl King (Rosetta Stone).

"Its better to die on your feet than to live on your knees"- Emiliano Zapata.

What the flipping flip was that? Dude, you need a meditation.

OK, let's quote one more from Metallica;
Quote:
I'm your truth, telling lies
I'm your reasoned alibis
I'm inside, open your eyes
I'm you

Sad but true

@cascade9: Well as far as And Justice For All is concerned, this is what happens when you let artists master their stuff, instead of letting a professional audio engineer do it. I also agree that album could be so much better if it were mastered properly. Normally I am not for remasters, unless it is necessary and that album should be remastered.

Artists should never even remaster their work on their own anyways. Case in point the 2004 remaster of Megadeth's album 'Cryptic Writings.' Dave Mustaine pretty much ruined what was a decent Megadeth album.

"Millennium hand and shrimp."

Redd Foxx from the TV show, Sanford & Son...

Quote:
We could have a little pork and beans now and a little zucchini later. Or a little zucchini now and a little pork and beans later. Or if you like the pork and beans, you can have them and I'll take the zucchini or I can take the pork and beans and you the zucchini so what will it be? Zucchini or pork and beans?
