Not all keys on Compaq laptop work

My friend called me tonight. She went a way on vacation and left her Compaq Presario 900 plugged in. We've had some exciting thunderstorms and when she came back, the computer wouldn't start, nothing showing up on the screen She sent it to HP for repairs. They sent it back and they replaced the modem, and I quess that's it. A lot of the keys aren't responding when you need them, so can't even log on. By the way, she uses WindowsXP home. I can get into safe mode, but it makes no difference.
I believe she's going to send it back. I'm just wondering if this is hardware problem due to the thunderstorm. Any ideas?
Thanks
Tom

I wouldn't mention the thundestorms
when you take it back
it would be a bit like crashing your car while driving drunk
and taking the car back to the dealership
complaining your headlights don't work

Tip
unplug all unnecesary electrical gear ( inc modems and computers ) during thunderstorms.

One lightning strike around here, gave a local computer dealer the chance to sell 128 modems to people with fried modems and I dont know how many other dealers benefited from that one strike.

I realize that, but she didn't. But she realizes that now. Unfortunately, the computer was out of warranty and she just spent over $200 US to get it fixed. I'm thinking the storm caused more damage then just the modem.

I am thinking that you are right

when we have a thunderstorm
even the washing machine gets unplugged
has delicate electronics you know

I've heard of toilets being blown up in a near miss with lightning

When I was a child, I wanted to get hit by lightening because I heard that one gets the taste of cold peanut butter when so struck. Then, of course, I got older and learned what happens when one is hit by lightening...

My friend is going to send it back, because it's obvious they sent it back to her not fixed. I don't know if you can plug in another keyboard or not. I thought of that and if that works, then the keyboard on the laptop is gone wrong.
Thanks for everyones' replys.
