no. of LQ-ers involved in open source development

wanna see our participation... don't worry just poll honestly, no one will be discriminated against...

I'm not actively involved at the mo, but I ain't planning to *not* get involved either :-] Contributed some minor stuff in the past for Mondo, Delegated and Chkrootkit.

jISV 04-25-2002 05:45 AM

Not planning to get involved. I don't have the time, I'm a developer for a living (at least for another year) and I'm a capitalist :)
Most open source things I see are apps for the PC, whereas I'm a business app developer.
:)

i see... yes i suppose the GPL is not really directed for production of commercial software... it seems to speak more for an ideal that turned out to be an alternative reality for the computing world. i'm sure they can co-exist (commercial stuff and GPL-ed stuff)...

I am currently not helping out yet because of a lack of computer programming skills.

However, I do hope to be able to contribute sometime.

gui10 04-25-2002 10:10 AM

so what would you like to contribute to shadow?

Thymox 04-26-2002 07:21 AM

Not involved in any at the moment. I couldn't program my way out of a paper bag, so I wouldn't be contributing on that front. Maybe music or gfx for games (not high end games, just low end, platform types ;)). Won't be for a while yet, though...when time becomes less occupied with other crap.

X11 04-26-2002 09:20 AM

Thymox and Shadowhacker, you's are in the boat as me. I can't program for peanuts. OK, probably the best I can do is so some basic PHP, that's about as complex as it gets (for now anyway).

BTW: If I could program, I would some more functionally to office packages for Linux (Word processors, Spreadsheets programs, etc).

I can tell you what I would like to see done.

An enhanced, finely woven multi-threaded kernel
A multi-threaded KDE desktop
A faster journaled file system
A more integrated windowing system
More GUI tools so the console can be more avoided

I also would like to help port apps to Linux from other platforms. There is a company I found that sells a software package ($1000) that will convert Win code to UNIX or Linux code, so then all you would need to do is touch work, and maybe some graphical front end work.

So there you go!

And create world peace while yer at it? LOL ;) Sounds like you wanna build your own distro from the ground up even? Ambitious!

As for me, i'd like to help out, though like others here have answered, I can't set a VCR much less code! Ok I can set a VCR if I read the destructions, but other than that, i'll be helping the community monetarily for now. I would like to write a couple how-tos though soon.

gui10 04-30-2002 03:06 AM

wow... i think i'll tread in trepidation from now on... that's a lot of stuff to contribute to!!! ;)
