Talking Nethack

I was just wondering how many nethack fans there are out there in the forum

By the way-- they just released a new version! Boy I'm glad school's getting out soon-- my GPA would go in the toilet.

...I guess I could always post my high score on my resume...

This is what it says on the NetHack homepage(www.nethack.org ):

"NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender. "

I personally think that NetHack is a great game. I actually have a 486 Debian box dedicated for it.

if you don't want to die so much be a monk or a caveman-- and don't try to kill everything. He who turns and runs away- lives to fight another day.

Its a fun little game I've never gotten past level 17 or 18-- always get to anxious and start trying to take on everything. Once I wished for the amulet of yendor and then went back to the beginning and realized that all I got was a cheap plastic immitation of the amulet. Just a tip -- if you're in school- wait till school's out to start playing, otherwise you'll never finsih that research paper.

Also for good tips on the game look for nethack spoilers-- sometimes they help -- sometimes they just spoil the game.

SuperTeece,
If you do, indeed have it correctly installed, then open a terminal and type: ./nethack
If it starts, then you've done well and go after the Amulet!
If it doesn't, then it's time to troubleshoot! But at least in the terminal, you'll see what caused it not to start.

OMG I wish I hadn't looked at this thread...not normally a gamer but a single player D&D-alike....used to be a real D&D head a few years back.
How long can I resist?

Nethack is awesome...

Whenever I start playing I'm on it for hours...if not up all night.

I wonder if any of you fans know...is there any way to change the keymapping in the console version? I have a laptop without a numeric keypad...which makes it hard to play..

theres a graphical version? ... if its installed with the "nethack" program can you please tell em the name of the program so i can try?

but yes, nethack is one of my favorite games, the farthest i got was lvl 8 (i tripped a trap and got thrown some lvls ahead apparently ) .... most game can get boring fast because every time you play its the same, and you know how every lvl works ..... gota love that randomly generated levels, keeps the game fun and not the boring same stuff .... tho i do rush while i play it, so i don't get that far (oops)

There are quite a few graphical clients ... my personal favorite is noeGNUd http://www.linuxgames.co.za/ which is fully 3D and OpenGL supported!! Then there's Falcon's Eye http://www.hut.fi/~jtpelto2/nethack.html which is also great. Of course I still prefer vanilla nethack in a console with a slick textured background ... there are more like qtnethack and xnethack and more but you can google those yourself.
