I just started getting random disconnects from my DSL service that I have had for over 2 years with nothing like this before. They did a line test and of course the line to my modem was good. I figure the problem is either my router went belly up or there is a intermittent line problem that has not been found. Should I go ahead and purchase a new router and see if that solves it or wait to see if it goes away? also I checked my router logs and see nothing that helps. are there any logs in linux that tell disconnect times or anything like that? Thanks
you could always try a direct connection for awhile (running the modem directly to the PC) taking the router out of the equation and seeing how it runs then.
I was having this exact problem, and found out it was the firmware in the router, updated it and it did fix it. But after a few months, same thing, and ended up having to replace the router.
But yes, I agree with jaz, try a direct connect for a while and see
I thought about giving that a try but could not decide on hooking up my XP box or Linux, LOL. Ill have to try that and see what happens. I just checked for a firmware update and I have the latest version.

Try them both to see if the problem persists. Then you can take this info or your findings to your ISP. And if they checked the lines, sometimes intermittant problems like that is the actual modem. Next time it disconnections, try just resetting it first, if you connect there after, you know its not your equipment but a problem the ISP has to fix.
I use to work at the Cable Company, it makes their life easier when you narrow it down for them cause most of the time the techs can't think for themselves and end up blaming the customers equipment if they can..

Actually I dont have to reset it, When it happens the connect light starts to blink which means im disconnected then maybe 15 to 30 seconds later it reconnects itselft. Its done it about 8 times so far. I started logging the dates and times it does it. Checked the router logs but it does not show that any disconnect has ocurred.
The worst part is when Im in the middle of a game online and my game freezes and I look up at the light and it starts to blink, Talk about gettting pissed off. LOL.
So your actual DSL connection is going down? By that I mean the status light on the DSL modem that indicates a solid link starts blinking? That could be a tough one to fix. If the modem is good then it is something with the line possibly.
I'd probably say its the modem then if its resetting itself like that. I'd suggest swapping it out for a new one and see if that rectifies the problem, if not, then most likely its the line to the modem.
Yea, since the router can be off and the link light on the modem does not start to blink I doubt its the router, But since I have disconnected all the cabling and reconnected, It has not done the disconnect thing, Possibly loose ether cable to modem? I hope
