shame they picked the Intel chip of the AMD chip thus increasing their cost by 20% and reducing their CPU power by about the same 20%, but still a great kick in the arm for LINUX.

you might want to consider the cooling costs that are saved when using intel because there processors dont run as hot as AMD's. As for the 20% lack of computing power where do you get that from? in my (admittedly limited)experience given anything thats hefty on the fpu P3s<1Ghz can seriously outperform Athlons>1GHz. i'd like to see some evidence of an AMD chip outperforming an equivelent intel chip on a big simulation.

Thats not too hard to find these days. The new AMD's 64 chips run cooler then the prescotts certainly do and even though they are clocked much lower then intel they run just as fast if not faster. But mit does depend on the application. For AutoCAD applications I found the new AMD 64's rendering twice as fast as the intel offerings. But for media art and design and audio Intel tends to run better then AMD though I am not so sure on the new 64 bits but I think it holds true. You gotta admit a whole bunch of AMD 64's in a cluster would be cooler then a bunch of intel itaniums which were crap when they came out and IMO still are crappy.


PS Didn;t see anything about beowulf clusters but its using linux which doesn't shock me a lot more flexibility for a super computer because the OS will probably be built almost from the ground up and Windows isn;t really designed for supercomputers and MS would probably admit that.
