myspace.com + firefox == thrashing?

I discovered something very strange yesterday. Twice when I've been browsing around looking at people's profiles on myspace.com with firefox 1.5, my PC (running Debian) suddenly starts thrashing like hell, with my hard disk constantly being accessed and my computer becomes damn near unresponsive (REALLY jerky mouse movement). Both times I've actually had to manually do a hard restart of my computer. I can't even switch out of X.

Has anyone else experienced this? It is incredibly odd to me, and is the first time I've ever had something like that happen to me on Linux. Crazyness

It usually has something to do with the coding of the site. I used to have problems with shortnews.com crashing my slower computers with FF 1.0.7 because of the news ticker at the bottom, it still makes my CPU usage sky rocket but it doesn't crash anymore with FF 1.5. I haven't spent any time on myspace, but from what I see the pages are overloaded with crappy music, animations and videos. Maybe you could post one of the links that gives you problems and see if it will do it to anyone else.

Yeah, that's what I hate about MySpace. People just throw so much freaking content on their pages (sometimes like 4 music videos) and I'm just like give me a break! I wish it could give you an option to disable all the videos and crappy music. Plus people who design their pages on there are idiots. "Drr, let me place this bright green text against my cool neon pink background! Hell yeah, I'm awesome!" :tisk:

I would link you to a page that crashes for me, but I don't feel like rebooting my PC again tonight. ;)

No shit! What a trainwreck.

If you do post a link, post it with a warning that viewing these pages has been know to cause siezures.

I think firefox was trying to do you a favor. ;)

You could probably add the NoScript extension to Firefox and blacklist the entire myspace domain.

Yea some of those people have music that plays in the background and on my compy (archlinux) it tries to open up like 50 xine windows !?!?!
In order to get a myspace account you should be forced to take a web design test ,god !

I've killed the music/movies on myspace w/ AdBlock. MySpace is a poor site, besides the fact that I have a profile. I've never had this problem w/ myspace profiles, but like I said, I killed the music/videos, because they annoy me.

R00ts 02-06-2006 07:41 PM

care to describe how you did that exactly? I just noticed I have adblock (but it's not enabled until just now) and I don't see any option for doing anything like that.

I haven't been to that site, but Flash banner ads are really starting to pi$$ me off. The animation on some consumes so much CPU time it should be considered a DoS attack. And there's nothing more emabassing than checking my web mail at work only to have the site's banner advertising start talking about hair growth pills. It's to the point now where I'm seriously considering disabling Flash support entirely. :o

a lot of the songs/videos are from two or three sites. If you right click on the places where these videos are playing, then you can just find the root site, (www.example.com/other/stuff/here, just cut it down to www.example.com/) then you can put an '*' after it, and it'll kill everything from the root site. Make sure you've got the '/' at the end.

@Crito, AdBlock is your friend. I've blocked about everything I need to, so the site is actually navigable.

elliott678 02-06-2006 09:14 PM

I use AdBlock Plus and Adblock Filterset.G Updater. Most banner ads are blocked and I don't get any flash popups, with the auto updater I didn't have to configure anything.

myspace.com is just another AOL type community, a bunch of idiots with computers.. ;)

No pun or offense to those using AOL or myspace, but you have to admit, most are idiots that don't know what they're doing with a computer. They're a danger to the online society. :p

lol - I'm in total agreement TK. I have a MySpace account, but there are no music videos, flash, etc on my page. I have the same thrashing problem and swore I would not do that :D

Yeah, your's doesn't appear to be that bad. I've seen some very awful myspace.com homepages.

R00ts 02-07-2006 06:08 PM

Some people actually do make good use of videos on their site though. I found one guy's page whom I graduated from high school with who is a film director now, and he had a clip of himself directing on the Travel Channel. It was really cool to watch. But yeah, most video files are just music videos that the people think are cool
