Hi, you do realise this is a Linux (& BSD/*nix) forum(?) -> Windows is not Linux/BSD <- :)

This is Linux Questions, you need to try the W7 forums:
http://www.w7forums.com/ On another PC, download and burn a Hiren's Boot CD: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ Full list of HBCD utilities: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd Hiren's Boot CD has the MbrFix tool amongst others. You may find this link helpful: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/win...mbr,10036.html |
Look up the "bootrec" and "bootsect" commands
https://neosmart.net/wiki/bootrec/ and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32523...ader-problems/ TIP: You can surf the internet using most of the liveCD/DVD linux distributions, even if you can't boot your computer from SDD/HDD. |
xolisani,
Once you have fixed the initial boot problem, you really need these 2 items to help protect you in the future. W7 System Repair Disk: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/window...-windows-7.htm System image backup to external hard drive: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/...-in-windows-7/ At the very least, make a system repair CD and backup your documents, photos etc to an external drive or similar. |
Windows overwrote the grub bootloader. Windows is very self-absorbed and does not think there are any other operating systems.
Here's a thread from the Ubuntu forums which contains instructions on how to restore grub. http://askubuntu.com/questions/83771...ling-windows-7 |
Also ...
(IMHO) Never  install any "Home" (or "Basic") version of Microsoft Windows! That doesn't mean that you need to pony-up many hundreds of dollars for something aimed at professional software developers, but you do need the administrative tools that the cheapskate editions conveniently omit. You also need to prudently set up a secure, and securable, configuration ... which these editions (purposely??) make it quite difficult to do. Buy the middle-of-the-road edition (not OEM ...), and do a "clean install" from the media onto the chosen partition, after erasing that partition. Then, immediately apply all security updates. (If you find that, now, your Linux cannot be reached, it simply means that Windows' installer overwrote the master boot record, as it is designed to do. You'll have to go back and reinstall grub, configuring it appropriately.) |
