My friend's 12yr old Daughter asks "What is Linux?"

Unbelievable!!! Well friends its the beggining of the landslide when kids start wanting to know what Linux is before they are even in Highschool. I guess his daughter has been seeing the commercials and just plain out of no-where (He doesn't even use Linux himself) asks her Daddy, "what is Linux?"

Wow! The things to come in the near future!!!:D

Very smart girl :) :)

frandalla 01-28-2004 12:32 PM

Yeah! that's just great! Now, we grant you the duty of teaching her the whereabouts of linux! :D

trickykid 01-28-2004 12:57 PM

Moved: Seems more suitable just in our General forum since its technically not a question. Regards.

At least now we know the commercials are doing their job. ;)

Just show her some of the smarter visual type things, like some of the kde eye candy or some of the little superkaramba type things.

The kid'll be hooked in no time (well, that's the theory anyway!)

regards

John

I heard a joke the other day about a tech support call:

dad: Yeah my computer wont run some apps right. it keeps freezing
tech: Have you tried rebooting?
dad: Yep.
tech: Have you tried removing and reinstalling?
dad: Still no good.
tech: Have you tried not using windows?
dad: That is all I know how to use.
tech: Sir, do you have a son or daughter?
dad: Yeah. Ill get her, but she is pretty young.. only 8.
tech: Thats ok. set her on.
girl: Hello?
tech: Hi. Whats your name?
girl: Melody. whats yours?
tech: Mike. Hey do you know how to configure Linux?
girl: Yeah.
tech: I want you to delete windows and install Linux for your dad.
girl: OK
tech: Ill hold on for you.
<after some time goes by>
girl: Im done.
tech: Great! Please put your father on.
girl: OK. Nice meeting you.
dad: What in the world did she do?
tech: Sir you should have no problems anymore.
dad: Wow. Thanks.
tech: Just doing my job sir.

This thread reminded me of it.

Stephanie, that's hilarious, where did you hear it? it's about the best joke i've heard or read in a while. thx for the contribution. i have saved it as a text file and will be sending to anyone that can read. thx again.

my step father put mandrake on a computer at my parents house pretty surprising because he "doesnt rust free software" anyhow....

my little sister whos 12 can use the apps on the linux box and seems to like the penguin downhill racing game. but nobody in the house ever really does anything on it for really silly reasons; theres no printer connected.... it doesnt have msn...... theres no games. my mum is the main user who just uses it for mine sweeper.

I think its good that people are getting exposure to linux but for alot of people who arnt really into computers it might just seem a bit daunting.

Hehe! That's too good, Stephanie. It is good to hear that our OS is starting to pervade into the lives of ordinary people as well as the techies. Kinda makes you all warm inside :D

witeshark 01-28-2004 08:51 PM

Linux ought to be well enough known. It's been around long enough. Didn't stop some kid in a Borders software shopping with mom from calling it LI_nux (long I) and passing it off to the next item.

questionasker 01-29-2004 02:52 PM

tell her he is a little penguin, who is going to beat the stuffing* out of bill gates.

*- sustitute an appropriate word ;)

Stephanie 01-29-2004 03:46 PM

I heard the joke from a friend of mine is all.

I am also glad that Linux is becoming so well known among normal folks. I think Billy has something to worry about, dont you?

Kurt M. Weber 01-29-2004 03:47 PM

I really don't care whether or not Mr. Gates has anything to worry about it. If people want to buy Windows, he will get wealthier. If they don't, he won't. I really don't care one way or the other. His wealth is not my concern.

I don't think Stephanie was implying on just his wealth, but overall as a whole. Lets not let this turn into another Linux vs. Microsoft debate, we have plenty of those already.

Regards.

I am pretty sure I know exactly what Kurt is saying. He is not saying whether windows is good or bad, he just doesn't care. He is happy with what he uses and as long as people leave him alone he doesn't care. At least that is how I am.
