I found this article interesting, because it has been about a year for me, too, since I divorced myself from all Google products and services, as well as Facebook.

I've never had any problems with Google. That said, I only use them for search and Google earth (oh, yeah, I have a SPAM collector mail account too in a made-up name).
I'd not more sign up to Facebook than I would Google+ though -- both make no bones that everything you post is theirs to do what they want with it and you are the product.
I'll likely not buy and Android phone either as the Google tie-in, whilst probably not that onerous, is definitely still a negative.
I use Gmail, the search engine, and the Android store (for my phone). Nothing else.
I laugh at the guy who wrote that though. He makes grand statements about being Google-free and untracked and uncoupled from Big Data, and then goes on to describe his Yahoo mail account, Yahoo maps, Flickr (Yahoo pics) account, Twitter account, and LinkedIn account. Sounds to me like he just traded masters, not set himself free.

Yes. I have - I did so after my Gmail account was somehow wiped and I lost almost 2000 emails. I have found the entire process to be absolutely fascinating. I am now using A/I for email, Startpage for search and Vimeo for video hosting.

I've had a Fastmail account for over a decade. The free tier won't give you more than a minuscle amount of storage, and I get spam an average of once or twice per week (so their spam filter isn't as good as the competition's), but it works well and is reliable.
