Music Software

I know Photoshop vs. GIMP shows up on forums often enough, but I don't tend to see Cubase/Sonar vs. Rosegarden/MusE too often.

I really have nothing against Windows in a non-networked enviroment such as a recording studio, but I would love to see a free alternative. The problem here is Rosegarden/MusE/DSSI really aren't on par with Cubase/Sonar/VSTi at all, but they REALLY have me excited because they have made leaps and bounds since I began using Linux a few years back.

I have some experience in programming VST instruments in Windows but I'm not really sure what the Linux equivalent is. I would love to start developing a simple guitar amp simulation/virtual instrument, but what plug-in system do I use, DSSI?

I rely heavily on Cubase and Amplitube right now. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone out there is using Linux as a studio computer?

I would love to hear from anyone and their personal experiences.
