One of the interesting parts is apart from their $613 million fine;

Quote:

The company argues that its rivals seek to lay claim to its intellectual property, so taking advantage of years of its research and development, and that Windows may not be able to function properly without Media Player.

Lleb_KCir 03-22-2004 03:44 PM

intersting. im hoping that is a typo, as windows will run just fine without media player, but runs like crap without IE.

trickykid 03-22-2004 03:46 PM

Funny how losing 613 million would have no impact on the company as well.. that's chump change to them. ;)

SciYro 03-22-2004 06:27 PM

people want to claim "their" IP?!??!?, umm last time i checked almost everything M$ has is because it bought it, or its a piece of crud (look at explorer, i heard they made it for a web browser, but it didn't work so well, so now its there file manager!!??!)

id say, let them claim M$'s IP! (if they have some), after all, if they actually did make it, it cant be all they good (look at explorer again :) )

witeshark 03-22-2004 07:19 PM

I might have said this before, but this whole story needs to be made a movie -seeing as how every new idea is a remake so they need something new

qanopus 03-23-2004 04:44 AM

Oh wow, 613 million. Isn't that the amount of money billy boy is spending on his lunch every day?

petercool 03-24-2004 11:00 AM

witeshark 03-24-2004 12:53 PM

The EU has had enough! New M$ trend starting?

I see that is says that Microsoft must "submit technical information to rival makers of computer servers within 120 days"

Does that mean that the people over at slackware will be getting an email full of MS source code in the next four months? :) Because that would be pretty cool.

vi0lat0r 03-24-2004 05:21 PM

Who in their right mind would -want- MS source code... (And I don't think they are referring to any kind of programming information at all in that quote)

its talking about windows media player, slackware is a distribution not a media player so no they wouldnt have to give them the source, i was thinking they might have to give it to the mplayer people but as mplayer doesnt run on windows it isnt really competition.

SciYro 03-24-2004 07:47 PM

ah, but maybe the source will be available to the mplayer people, that way they (or someone) can make open sourced fully compatible windows meda formats for linux (i hate binaries!)
