Hi guys,

Help me OUT!! SOS!!!!!!!!!

I got a Compaq PC with a internal 56kb modem. Recently it started connecting on 26kb speed instead of 56kb, I tried using different service providers, all work the same way. What do u think I need to change, to pace my modem.
Note: Earlier it was working fine.

You sure that nothings changed on your phone line?

Nothing has changed, I got a new verizon line, and I hope it should be the same.

Sounds to me it could be your new verizon line, don't know for sure though, but if nothing has changed but your phone line, that could be the verdict.

U know what, I changed to a new home, so I got a new telephone line from same subscriber, verizon. The computer is same, the o.s. is same and everything remained the same. Also I checked the ports connection, to see if something is wrong there.

over the past two years, i've lived in three different houses... in two of the houses, i got 56k connection almost every time. in the third, i hardly ever got over 33k. i don't think there's anything you can do on the computer. it's just the line quality.

isn't if i am not mistaken basically the same thing i said... i have had the same thing happen to a buddy of mine as well... i guess i should make myself more clear in the future. :D

it is essentially saying the same thing... i just thought that an example of personal experience would help to convey the finality of the situation. :)

ok, linux gurus with all your infinite wisdom what is the physical limit(average) of copper cable? And it is not 56K!

Ok guys, enuf examples, so I understand it has something to do with traffic. What shud I do now, rent in a remote location....

Why dont you call your tel company and tell them to change your wiring? I think they should do it, at least they did it for me (after screaming on the phone cursing at everyone who works for them) hehe. I would not recomend that though because after 2 weeks my dsl was slower than a 56K modem.

well.. motiram... what we're basically trying to say is that there really isn't much you can do, except for following dilberim82's advice and pestering your phone co. but, i know that i sure as hell wouldn't expect MY phone co to help out. maybe yours is nicer.

Funny, but after the DSL was installed here we had connect speeds of around 26K for modem connects. We were at 44+ before.

Well after working tech support for earthlink i can say screaming at the telco won't help, they're only required to give ya about a 3600bps i think. Someone else asked what the physical limit of copper wire is, and it's 64kbps, but the good old government set a limit at 56k for normal users. If ya could figure out exactly what modem it is, you maybe able to put in an initialisation string and specify the Kflex or X2 protocol, whichever your modem uses, it's been known to help occasionally. You may also want to call your ISP and ask the for a POP with the same protocol (X2 or Kflex) as your modem. You may even want to call your ISP and ask for a list of all the access numbers in your area and see if any of those get you on any faster.

by the way a driver update for your modem never hurt either
