Madness all day long installing errr.. trying to install slackware rant........:O

I had a major system crash, So I went this morning and picked up a new 200 gig seagate. I have been trying to install slack all day long. I already had slack 10.2 but it would not install due to corrupted files or damaged media errors, so I downloaded slack 2 different times still got the same errors, tried different servers, 2 different cdroms and the same thing. I finally tried to install just the base linux, no X or anything and that worked but now I am left with just command line. I will have to DL and install X and all the fun gui stuff.
I tried to upgrade kernel to 2.6 and got seg fault, the same I was getting on the old HD.
So now I dont know if I should simnply build a new system or try to switch out the ram or what but anyway this whole day has been a linux learning day/pulling my hair out day......

There is a file called CHECKSUMS.md5 in the root directory of your Slackware CD which contains instructions about how to check that the files are OK.

What method were you using to upgrade? Are you compiling it from source? Or are you using the 2.6 packages from a Slackware CD?

And could you please post the exact error you get?

I'd try to sort out your software issues first.

I cant really go into the errors because this is more of a rant than a help thread, but since YOU asked , I dont remember the exact error but it wasnt a problem with a spacific file because sometimes the same files would install and other times they would not. I am leaning towards the cdroms. I tried 2 different downloads from 2 differnt servers and on 2 different types of cds.
I really wanted to get 2.6 kernel working but got seg fault on make..

Uh-oh. It doesn't look good.

I'm guessing you have a RAM problem.

Try downloading memtest86 to test it and be sure:

http://www.memtest86.com/

or memtest86+ if you have newer hardware:

http://www.memtest.org/

HTH.

Thanks I will give that a try.
The hardware is not very old and its name brand stuff, 2 512 sticksl of Kingston ram with heatsinks, the kind gamers use. This system is only around 2 years old. Ill check out the memory. Thanks.
