Mac Pro woes

We just purchased 2 new quad core mac pros for video editing. Its a good thing we bought two because one of the machines that we have, had a defective heat sensor, so it over heated and died. It is a brand new machine, under warrenty, so our tech guy calls in CBE to take a look at it. Yup, its dead, bad heat sensor. So I say ok lets pack it back up and sent it back for a replacement. No, no, no, we have an Apple certified technician who can do a field repair on your machine. So the guy comes in, opens the case and is all set to repair the machine except that his special screw driver is not long enough to reach the part he has to replace.

Apparently the necessary repair tool is so specialized that it has to be specially ordered from Apple...so now we are waiting for them to manufacture the tool he needs to repair the very expensive machine that we purchased from Apple.

So one of top of the line Mac Pros is now a very expensive door stop!

It has been three weeks and counting since the machine stopped working and it is still not fixed yet.

So why am I posting this story...Well its because I am always hearing from people about how "dangerous" open source technology is because it has no "warrenty". Well the machine we just purchased has a warrenty and it is still broken. Just goes to show you that a warrenty is not a gaurantee.

the only thing that i ask when i purchase anything "significant" is "... within how many weeks or days can i return it for a direct one to one replacement ... ??" if i found anything looks faulty(and i dont care , it looks faulty means it looks faulty to me) to me ... normally works downhere if you dont over doing and abuse the offer if they agree to that ...

as for warranty things ... normaly its either a drag or the post box is a bit too far for me ...

that sounds unusial for apple to me...

my housemate had a ibook G4 which had a few hardware problems this year, they were allways fixed in a few minuts (when he took it o the genius bar at the apple shop)
eventually tho the logicboard gave up so he got a brand new mackbook absolutly free as the ibook was still under the extended warrenty!
