mac os 9.2 question

hi all,

just a question for mac os 9.2. i need to try to get the data off of the hdd. is there a 3rd party app for linux to access the mac data off of the hdd and back it up?

i attached the drive to a usb external device and windows does not see it. it will say it is an unallocated disk in disk management.

i tried to use knoppix 5.1.1 but i cant mount the hdd.

any support will be a great help

thanks

Try some rescue cd such as systemrescue, anything that has the driver required to access the file system in question (HFS I guess).

i tried the program you mentioned but i dont think it will work for me the ppc version is for a power pc only. the apple imac has a bad dvd drive, and the x86 version will not see the drive at all. do you have anything else that could work?

thanks

The Linux kernel has support for accessing HFS & HFS+. Load the appropriate modules, have the right packages installed and mount. In my Debian I installed "hfsplus, hfsutils, hfsutils-tcltk", not sure if the third one is necessary. Then issue command: modprobe hfsplus. Make a directory to mount it to in Linux: mkdir /macdrive. Then find which device it is with command: fdisk -l, if for example your USB Mac drive is /dev/sdb and you want to mount the first partition /dev/sdb1, mount it with command: mount -t hfsplus /dev/sdb1 /macdrive
Your partition should now be accessible in /macdrive directory.
The HFS+ file system was introduced in Mac OS 8.1, I am assuming that is the file system you are using, if not, use 'hfs' instead of 'hfsplus'.

Some Linux distributions will only let root access non-native file systems, depends on the permissions your user has.

You also need to have support for mac partition map in the kernel.
