Linux/Windows poll
 

Hi,

I am an avid linux user who needs statistics on linux and windows for a final math project. I have several questions I would like users to answer, and I have put the same post on another website. I will be rating the answers to my questions, and I will also be rating how many responses i get to each post. Here are My questions:

1. What is your main OS?
2. Do you dual boot between Windows and Linux?
If yes:
i) Why do you use the other (the one not specified in question 1)?
ii) Do you plan to switch to one OS and dump the other?
iii) Which has the largest partition? or are they equal?

My main OS is Redhat Linux 9.0
I dual boot.
I have/use Windows to play games that aren't Linux/Wine compatible.
I don't plan to switch to only one OS, though if I did it would be Linux.
I think both my partitions are of equal size.

Main OS: Slackware Linux 9.1
Dual boot? I tri-boot (For the sake of the poll, I'll just answer as if I was a dual boot)
I use Windows for softsynthesis, recording, and win32 programming.
I don't plan on switching to a single boot.
My install partitions are of equal size, but I have a 100 gig Ext3fs partition (/home) and a 50 gig NTFS partition for data storage (to isolate critical data from the install)

1. for printing some school papers... fedora doesn't like my router.

1. both RH9 and winXP pro

i use RH9 to host an apachie site for me and to learn linux. i try to do as much work in linux as i can to get more familure with it every day. just now learning how to ssh, cygwin, etc.

i use winXP pro for gaming and listening to music. i trashed my RH install and now mp3s refuse to play. dont go there done it tried it. next install ill not mak the same mistake twice.

2. no i have XP on my desktop and RH9 on my laptop. they sit next to each other.

i. see above. also at my office i run a win2k domain for security reasons. yes i know its not the best for external security, but the policies are easy to setup and keep my EU from accessing more then i want them to. yes im a M$ guy for now. im a wanaBe linux user/admin.

ii. i do not see a way to complety do away with M$ as i really enjoy my gaming. i play DAoC and it is already a pay to play service, i really dont want to add more money to pay for wineX on top of that and get reduced performance.

iii. 2 seperate systems so does not count. my laptop has a 30G HD, and my desktop has an 80G SATA seagate HD.

Dual boot to XP only for my Archos mp3 player.
I will dump XP after I get the $$ to get an iPid :D
Both partitions are almost of the same size and I hate giving XP that space :cry:

i) Why do you use the other (the one not specified in question 1)?
WindowXP- for my digital camera, I have plans on getting an upgrade and just have not felt
like dealing with the driver in Linux

ii) Do you plan to switch to one OS and dump the other?
eventually there will be no reason for me to stay with Windows, then yeah, I will dump it and
dual boot with another OS (still pondering which one)

iii) Which has the largest partition? or are they equal?

Yes

i) Why do you use the other (the one not specified in question 1)?
Win98 is the main OS for several reasons:
1) I actively use a number of applications available only in Windows (MindManager 2002, BibleWorks, Logos and AZZ Cardfile).
2) I want to receive email only on one side - so we receive email on the Win98 side and surf the web from there 90% of the time.
3) my family likes to play games on Win98.
4) I have the Win98 side setup, optimized and working the way I want it.
5) I'm in the middle of switching to another Linux distro from Red Hat 7.2, and I'd like to test a few different ones before settling on a specific one. Although I will say I am heavily in favor of SuSE 9.1 at the moment.


ii) Do you plan to switch to one OS and dump the other?
Yes and no. I do plan to switch to a number of applications in Linux, but I'm not dumping Win98. Two years ago I decided I was not going to upgrade to anything Microsoft beyond Win98. The reasoning was pragmatic - I wanted to avoid upgrade costs in software and hardware. In the near future I'll choose a Linux distro and use Opera for surfing and Evolution for email. I'll be keeping Win98 on another machine and use a KVM switch to go back and forth between Linux/Win98. Over time my family and I will use and prefer a number of other Linux applications (gnucash, xmms, etc) which are either lacking on our Win98 machine or are superior to what we now have. Eventually I will experiment with wine and CodeWeavers to see how well (or not) my preferred applications run under Linux.


iii) Which has the largest partition? or are they equal?
They are equal, with 20Gb each.

I dual booted once for a while and hated it because I was going rebooting so much. However, I was still in school at the time.
I only use XP for gaming and I'd go totally away from it if I could get my game on, in Linux, the way I do with XP. So what am I doing here if my main OS is XP? Slackware 9.1, it's on my server and is going on my newly aquired laptop.

I have 2 physical computers, but I guess for the purposes of your math project, you could say I dual boot.

I use Windows XP for the few apps I cant use on Linux, such as the google toolbar (which is useful in website authoring).

I almost exclusively use my linux computer, and will completely dump my windows XP when google releases the google toolbar for Mozilla Firefox for Linux.

My Gentoo Linux computer has the largest hard drive (120gb vs 40gb)
