EDIT: Ugh... I need to pay more attention when a thread is too old... I don't know about you... but my quick reply was there. If that was simply removed from old threads, less people would post to them.

Hi there,

The question you should be really asking to me is 'Are you ready to move to Winduhs?'.

Linux has not only been a life saver for me many times (especially the live cds) but it has been fun. For almost a year now I have booted linux and its very rarely (just to see what would mess winduhs registry) that I even use winduhs now.

I am not an expert with Linux but I find all that can be done in winduhs can be done much faster and more effeciently than any other OS

I think that gaming in Linux is defenetly not as mature as in Windows. I mean I had my Linux for a week and I didn't get a single game running smootly. I am they guy who keeps posting messeges complaining that games run at 2 FPS. To me it seems that installing nVidia drivers in Linux is not as trivial as in Windows. I downloaded 2 rpms from nVidia.com, installed it and it crashed my X Window. And on top of that I can't make my soundcard work either.

However, in just 2 days I've been able to do things with linux that I've never been able to do with Windows (with ease that is) for years, like setting up an ftp and other services.

I would like to see nVidia and game developers supporting linux a little bit more. But so far linux operating system is only on roughly 5% of all desktops.

Thanx
Not a problem for me.

The only thing that used to make me use windows occasionally was ipod. Now gtkpod works great with my ipod classic so I have no reason whatsoever to use windows.

I hope the mods close this thread and that whoever wants to continue it just repost the question. because a 56-page thread is ridiculous. So much of it will never be read.

Also, the thread was started 7 years ago, and in today's world of dual-booting and near perfect virtualization, the original question is basically irrelevant, IMHO.

Cheers

Since you missed most of the posts on this thread, I can see why.

i now have a reason for using windows over Linux.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/...teamnum=134546

http://folding.stanford.edu/

As they do not allow for Linux to use the GPU to fold, i have turned my old workstation, that was linux/windowXP, and now it sits and runs nothing but winXP folding its life away.

My main computer is a MAC so *nix FTW, but if stanford would build a GPU client for linux id move that computer back to linux.

the folding times are about 50x faster with the GPU then they are the linux CLI on the exact system.

you run the numbers.

this has nothing to do with what OS is better, just that the 3rd party vendor has not gotten off their duff to build a linux GPU client.

Well, I guess I could run folding on my GPU if it had the ability but I wouldn't switch to windoze for folding or anything else. If Linux disappeared tomorrow, I'd buy a Mac, used maybe but a Mac still. If that was gone too, I'd be back to writing checks and putting them in the mail. Read that as, I wouldn't use windoze even if it was all there was. Period. I see windoze enough when I have to go work on my bros puter or some friends puter. That's enough pain for me already.

Would GPU work in this? I have a FX-5200. I think it would be to old for this.

AFAIK gpu computations (CUDA, GPU accelerated PhysX, etc) are supported only on GeForce 8400 and above. Check nvidia website for more info. So GPU-accelerated folding won't work on your card. However, if you really want to donate your electric power and cpu time, there is "standard" cli folding client, which works on linux.

As far as I know, CUDA is supported on Linux, which means it is their problem. Check nvidia website for details.

I already run the regular CPU folding. I been running that for a long while. I only run one now but at one time I had three single CPU machines running and one quad CPU machine running. Electricity rates went up, one machine broke etc so I stopped running all but the one in my sig.

The rig in my sig runs 24/7 so it helps some at least.
