Linux applications

Hello everybody,
recently I browsed to http://www.linuxjunior.org website with pbharris as a parent of it. As you might already know he is a lot of help here as well. Hmmm, ok to the point - at linuxjunior there is an intersting thread going on about useful applications, so I'd like to start a thread here to bring the same issue. Please everyone if you'd like to share your awareness of a particular app that you found very helpful in any aspect of your linux experience, please, spread the word, let other know. Here is a couple from myself:
sdx11 - damn it is a straight forward perl script that allows you to choose which windowmanager to launch from a command line (sort of modified startx )
Genmenu - automatically generates menus for WindowMaker, bb, fluxbox, enlightenment, etc. based on the apps installed on your system.

I am a little over my head right now to get anything else, believe me the list doesn't end here there is handreds more very useful and not so obvious applications that ease our linux experience.
Good day everyone.
Regards,
Boris

How's about your usual plug besides that Acid? MPlayer for playing just about anything video (and probably audio as well).

System monitor? Check out GKrellm

Web Browser? My favorite (and is stock on most systems with GNOME): Galeon

CDcopy? Check out CDCopy over at www.jetblackz.freeservers.com

mp3player? Based on Ncurses, and doesn't need X to run: mp3blaster

Digital Video from a Digital Camcorder? DVGrab

GUI CdBurner? Arson

Instant Messenger for ALOT of different protocols? GAIM

File Browser? Gentoo

Best website for Linux info? www.linuxquestions.org

Favorite website to find above mentioned and much more software: www.freshmeat.net

Probably have more, but that's it for now...

Cool

Acid I don't know if Xtart is better or not, it only comes in Mandrake rpm format, but here is a filemanager called worker which does the work a little beyond what mc can handle

Where to start? Most all newer Linux stuff is pretty cool.

CD burning under Linux is the best, (EZ CD creator is crap under windows) I use XCDroast (actually cdrecord I guess) Galeon is the best browser I've ever used, & Open Office is great. I downloaded both Linux & Windows version & use both depending on what OS I'm in at that time, I'm telling everybody about it, It's a lot better than that MS Works crap (Word has caused an Illegal operation and will now close bye bye document). There's more but I'm tired & must rest now.

Cygwin has been a pain in the fabric of my work life. I like the idea, but it's slow and came with nothing. I'm sure you all know how annoying it is to want to get a really cool app or something just to find out you don't have the prequisites. So then you have to go get the other apps/libs which may also have prequisites and/or orders of installation and so forth. Cygwin didn't even come with make . I do however, appreciate their effort. Anyways, that's just my two minute denominators of currency.

Actually, I don't know if it's a new thing or what, but I was able to choose what packages I wanted installed, and make was on of them. I got all my development tools

Slow doesn't describe this molasses though. I am used to my configure's going almost too fast to read the output, but on here I can read each line, watch a movie and come back and have it almost be done.

And the same for apps/libs, it had a list of things available, and I even have X on here

Cool

<edit>
In fact I just browsed over here to read this in Lynx

well ya just ain't trying hard enough then! so many people think Xine is better than MPlayer until they realise how comprehensive MPlayer is. of course people are always entitled to their opinons. Unless they're different to mine that is.

i'm still utterly utterly lost when someone says they use xcdroast though. one of the most obtuse and annoying (and ugly.. which matters far too much to many people) apps i've ever used. hideous.
