Linus Torvalds
I'm British currently living in the U.S. I say Lie-nux my American friends
call it like (L)Tin-ux. Whats the correct pronunciation. I wonder how Mr Torvalds pronounces his name. |
you can hear:

or if you prefer an *.au format.
It's the first result if you google "linux FAQ". When I first show it i thought it was really stupid, but there are many people who wonder about this. No doubt it's in a linux FAQ. http://www.tldp.org/FAQ/Linux-FAQ/ge...ronounce-linux |
If people understand what you mean, it's a correct pronunciation. If you want to appear cool, say it like the other cool people around you, or be an eccentric if that happens to be appreciated. :) Linux as a community project isn't very dependent on one person's opinion on how to pronounce the name.
BTW, this is the Linux Software forum and this question is more suitable for the Linux General forum. Simon |
For what it's worth, I always say Lie-nucks.
Lih-nucks is a bit more awkward for me to pronounce, but I guess it doesn't have the negative connotation of the word "Lie", eh? ;) |
It's lin-ux, with lin rhyming with tin.
Just because Charles Schultz has a Lie-nus, doesn't mean Linus Torvald's mom calls him that... he's more of a Lee-nus, not Lie-nus. And you add that with Lee-nus, Minix, and Unix... you get Lee-ux or Lin-ux, not Lie-nux. So there. Truly I say unto thee and verily it is so. :D |
It's Lin-ux to me as well, though I had an interesting debate about this on vacation with family last month. Good to know I got something right!

I say lie-nux but I'm not really fussed either way, I can only think of one friend who knows what linux is and he's probably the only one who uses a computer for more than an hour per week anyway.

I think that we have now had 2 of these so far this year. Please do a search of the General forum - there is a particularly long thread discussing just this question and which touches on pronouncing other FOSS program names.
