Linus response to moronic MS-funded study.
Linus has admitted who actually is the father of Linux. This is funny.
http://www.linuxworld.com/story/44851.htm Here is the original article claiming he ripped off Linux. http://www.adti.net/kenarbeit/samiz.release.html I knew it!!:D :D |
? where does it say it was funded my MS?
|
I am not quiet sure how true this story is. Linux is based on Unix and is not a completly alien system. Most people will find the commands very similar.
As for any of this being ms funded. I find that as likely as IBM funding Apple. Correct me if I am wrong about any of this as I would only say I was 99% certain. |
HadesThunder: , here i found a article at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/17/adti_linux_fud/
let me quote half a line from it: Quote:

That is why I wrote that I was only 99% certain :)

www.slashdot.org is running an thread on it now

Anybody else want more info on this:

This is simply Microsoft paying someone to propigate more FUD, in a way that makes them look cleaner to the press. Really, can you see anyone making this claim independently? This is the same institute that claimed linux helped terrorism...
On an interesting sidenote, the Alexis de Tocqueville institute website seems to have been brought down. Surely by the influx of angry Linux users wanting to send them hate mail. Or maybe an angry Linux cracker. I'd say it's 50/50. www.adti.net |
If Linux is not based on Unix then why are most of the commands the same? I have never heard of Minix.
What grounds could this institude have possibly given for the statement "that Linux helps terrorism"? |
Minix was created after UNIX was no longer available to universities for educational purposes. It is widely used even now in Operating System classes.
|
Minix is a Unix 'clone', similar to Linux. It is the system Linus was studying when he decided to write his own "Unix-workalike".
Like Linux, it is not *based on* Unix. It is designed to us the same command syntax as Unix, and to all external appearance *look like* Unix, but the code was developed independently of Unix. |

:D :D "Since then," Torvalds continues, "I've lived a life of subterfuge, always afraid that somebody would find out the truth. I'm actually relieved that it's over, and that the Alexis de Tocqueville Institute has finally uncovered the lie. I can now go back to my chosen profession, the exploration of the fascinating mating dance of the common newt." :D :D |

What you are witnessing is a phenoma known as the Slashdot effect. Seriously, just being mentioned on slashdot can send a big enough spike in traffic (non-malicious) to bring down some web servers. |

the GNU project (FSF) was set up to make a free clone of the UNIX OS, in my opinion the only really good things they made were glibc, gcc, make, and bash .. almost everything else can easily be replaced) .... like i said above there kernel wasn't really ready (or done), when linux came along it just slid right in and now seems to make some people angry anyways if you don't like the commands then you can use the "alias" thingy to set up new command imitators, or use functions to group them all up... or if you really want just make your own, you don't have to most of the things there (some programs expect certain programs to be there tho) the only reasons i can think of is, GNU/Linux is a free (almost, the internet is not free, and niether is CD's, so unless you got a friend you gonna pay, but a lot less mind you)... and it is also a powerful OS (UNIX is powerful, very very very powerful compared to Macro$hit's "caged" OS's (and newer versons called TC OS's) the other reason they can say that is becasue they are capitalist pigs and will say anything for money (this is really sad actually) |
