lindows anyone?
 

Hi, I was housekeeping my bookmarks under Opera, and I came across Linux Armed, little did I know it directly linked to lindows, so I was thinking why not put it on my dad's machine (currently running Mandy 8.2), so went ahead to get lindows and I was stumped $99 for a year subscription, I am just wondering has anyone here fallen to that crap?

i thought everyone here knew it cost that much. it's always mentioned every time somone tries to start their own thread about this crazy "lindows" thing. :D

and that 99 bucks doesn't get you the software, only the insiders crap to news and new development on lindows. it hasn't officially been released yet.

And they still haven't GPL'd their code yet...

I'm not sure if it'll be released at all...

But more interestingly, why would your Linux Armed bookmark take you directly to Lindows?

That's the question! I mean, I was out for a while and I am not following any developments in lindows arena in any way, I just heard some news over time - lindows will allow run MS apps natively, MS sues lindows, lindows gracefully cruising off the law suit, and that's all. I am happy with my RH setup, LFS is still in progress (lack of funds delays getting new machine for LFS :cry: ), and when I clicked the bookmark I thought I'd be in a new site I've never heard of before and I ended up in lindows hands. So well, now I know, and my assumptions of lindows being a bull crap proved to be true.:cool:

I think the whole idea for Lindows is that some corporate boffin hears about how great and free linux is and there's this version that can run all his company's MS software, maybe he will try it.

I just took a skootch over to Armed's site, and lo-and-behold it does take me straight to Lindows' site. It doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your bookmark, the site redirects straight to Lindows.

Anyone know what happened to Armed?

Well any modifications to the kernel and any other GPL'd software they have to, or they can get in big trouble as its required by the GPL.

Also, note that the Armed Linux official homepage (http://www.armed.net/) automatically redirects to http://www.lindows.com/armed/.

Kinda suspicious, don't you think? Lindows people are not idiots(their victory over M$ in court is evidence enough of that), they either saw something of value in Armed Linux (and bought it off from the original developers), or they simply hired the entire Armed Linux development crew. That's just my hunch.

Also, note that Armed Linux has disappeared off LinuxISO as well... I may be wrong, but I think they used to be listed there and had an alpha or a beta version out.

Conclusion: I smell baloney. Sounds like an M$ styled attempt to rip some money off unsuspecting end-users (Windoze ME comes to mind).

Yeah. Apple released Darwin under an Open Source license as well, but is it the same OS that is Mac OS X? Far from it.

Maybe they'll release some form of an Open Source version of their kernel, but I bet it's not going to be the same as the real Lindows...

Sorry for my endless skepticism, by the way... These posts just reflect my 2 cents with regards to this situation. :(

Remember that there is a difference between BSD and GPL. With Linux it's rather impossible something like Darwin (because of license).
