Angry Legal MP3 Downloadig

I want to download an MP3 preferably legally, but when most sites require the use of windows software or Mac. They also expect me to pay online using windows also. For me personally that is an act of insanity with all those windows virus and spyware that seem to infect a secure computer.

I just want to pay for the damn track and download it, simple, no?

If you secure your computer enough (running Windows) you wont have to worry about sites like iTunes, Musicmatch etc because the music is of high quality and is from a reliable source. Its when you download from p2p sites like Kazaa where you have to worry about spyware and viruses.

You could try allofmp3.com. It's a Russian-based site that allows you to choose from a huge catalogue at very, very affordable prices. Choose by the song or album. No DRM. You're charged by the mb and pick the codec and bit rate you prefer (countless options). So, about 70 cents an album, give or take some based on length and bit rate.

The legality of this is for another discussion. It's legal in Russia. Whether it's legal for people outside of Russia to use is unclear. But, Russia is not signatory to the same international copyright agreements that the U.S. is, so how you define legal would change between jurisdictions. As an example, it is not illegal to download or upload in Canada but is in the U.S.

In any case, excellent quality files and works with Firefox if you allow pops-up for their site (needed to pop up codec selection, not adverts).

allofmp3.com, is a realy realy good site, I recommend it to anyone. Why is it soo cheap? Cuz in russia, the ruppee is worth around 6-10 cents in america. so a 15 ruppee album would cost like 20 cents over here.

I forgotton to say that I am running linux and I am living in the UK. You will not believe it but in the uk they charge $1.70 a track. Site like Nabster Itune force direct me to a uk site. This is another case of ripoff Brittian.

Toomsie, I, too, use Linux and can use allofmp3.com with Firefox without an issue.

And if you want Ogg, you can choose that codec, too. Whatever you want.

As for Nuk's comment re: Ogg DRM. Ogg is open source. Ogg DRM would defeat the intent of Ogg, as I understand it. So, you're not likely to ever see it. And if you did, the community would probably immediately fork it and start over with a new non-DRM codec within days.

They're not required to by Russian law. You can even rip in FLAC, if you want, although that would get pricey.

Basically it boils down to you paying for stuff
someone else stole (but it's not theft in their
country). I wonder what the legal aspect on
that in the States would be ;)

Cheers,
Tink

It's not theft in the U.S., either. It's copyright infringement. Big difference and not an issue of semantics, like the RIAA would like you to believe.

Wouldn't say allofmp2.com necessarily stole it, either. They may have perfectly legal source copies. Who knows. Guess the U.S. long-arm of the law can't go wherever it really chooses, despite what it thinks. It likes to try convince people that if it's illegal in the U.S., it's illegal for U.S. residents to purchase outside their country. But, that's not entirely clear. There's also the U.S. effort to convince people that if it's not legal in the U.S. that other countries that allow it are somehow wayward and not operating above board. Again, not true.
