KDE on Mac/Windows?
 

I understand that KDE and all associated software is developed using Qt. The main advantage of Qt is that it provides portability to all major OSs.

Now, I assume that porting KDE itself to Mac or Windows would be impossible because I assume it is created with the Qt/Embedded Linux system, but surely the KDE software such as K3B and KOrganizer etc could be compiled in Windows or Mac OS?

Am I talking sense here, or is there a fatal flaw with this?

And, don't get me wrong, I don't actually want to use KDE software on Mac or Windows. I wouldn't bother to do that since I already have it on Linux. This was just a thought that suddenly popped into my head and I wanted to know the answer.

you cant compile it as-is on windows.
for example... K3b uses the /dev/cdrom block device to access the cd-writer.. windows does not provide such hardware access.

but i suppose you COULD port it.... if you had the desire.

you can run KDE on OSX already. im sure K3B would compile as well.. but there is nothing like that for windows... there are alternate shells that you can run on windows however.

yeah... Linux / Unix / BSD / OSX there all very similar.

i havent seen any qt apps on windows. i see a lot of gtk ones though like firefox, gimp, gaim.

anyone know what OOo uses?

If I'm not mistaken Flux Box runs on Windows but i can't remember a tech was showing a linux window manager that run on windows but like i said i can't remember what it was.

isnt OOo a java based app ?

I remember reading somewhere that you can get Gnome, Fluxbox, KDE, etc. running under cygwin under Windows...
