CentOS/RHEL is meant to be a very stable OS, that is why it is developed very carefully. Just replacing components (especially essential ones) does directly contradict the "I want it stable" mentality, so my question would be: Why are you using CentOS in the first place?

Yes, I'm aware of the Cent OS/RHEL policy. But I was very eager to try out the new stable kernel. So I installed. I use Cent OS for my R&D , testing purpose in Office.

Nope. On the rare occasions I've played with a RHEL clone (Usually Scientific Linux) I tend to stick with the official distro maintained kernel.

I'm updating my kernel regularly(*) on Slackware, but Slackware distro kernel updates are few and far between.

(*) Actually, a bit too regularly! What was 3.7.3 out for? About 3-4 days, that was annoying!

I agree, on Slackware I also maintain my own kernel updates, but usually I try to stick with a long term support kernel. I'm only trying 3.7.x now because nouveau. I will probably revert to 3.4.x if the driver does not improve, and remove my nvidia card completely now that I have an option.

On a distro like CentOS/RHEL you probably shouldn't upgrade the kernel yourself, especially to 3.7.x.
