Just curious - are there any people here who aren't familiar with windows??
 

I know that most people here are windows users trying to figure out what the hell they are doing in linux, but are there any people here that are the other way around? Do any of you feel uncomfortable or confused in a windows OS?

Haha, are u joking? Most of ppl here use linux because they dont like something about windows (or dont like windows at all :p )

I'm becoming less and less familiar with windows as time goes on. Often puzzled when I get a problem on the kid's XP box.

lol ... so true ... but you know what's weird? Although Windows is garbage, I feel at peace with it. I'm in total control with everything cause I know the ins and outs with it, I know how to hack it, I know hpw to fix it ... that stuff. If only I know linux like I knew windows ... maybe one day ...

Ha, you have to be VERY slow to have trouble with Windows :P ;)

I think I'm pretty smart, yet I have trouble with Windows all the time...

That's because Windows sucks.

Edit: I meant that you have to be very slow if you don't know your way around Windows, too user-friendly.

I promise I won't have a clue how to use Windows Shorthorn :D

That is if it ever released (read: vaporware).

Am I the only one that read that Microsoft was cutting out features from Shorthorn to get it on the market earlier? Does anyone else smell something? Oh that is fear I smell.:D

i read about that too.... yet another action to contradict them selfs (i read some were they wanted to take time with it, and make sure it had the features and such,,, then they start cutting things.... .*sigh*)

anyways, I'm totally lost in windows.... i know theres something here and something there, and something called a registry...

but to tell you the truth, i haven't got a clue about how windows works... if something totally messes up i doubt i could fix it... windows is totally confusing and makes me feel like i know less then it does... i swear people that say windows is for computer illiterate people (to put it nice) are totally wrong!, windows is for geniuses!, only a complete genius could tell it to run a program without it crashing :).. so yes, i feel lost in windows, at least in linux i have to know how it works, and it lets me.. very Nice, makes me feel like I'm using a old computer that did as it was told! *remembers the commodore 64, and some other computer that he forgets, but was probably his first* .... ahhh. how i miss having computers run slow because of its hardware limit, but because a program goes haywire!

i know my way around dos and i know my way around win2k, but for anything non-trivial im lost with other microsoft systems.

its really annoying when someone asks for help, i go to there computer, from the symptoms i get a pretty good idea what the problem is but have no idea how to fix it cos i cant find the options.

i expect the first release of Longhorn to be the winME of the NT world for M$, and will not upgrade beyond were i am in the M$ world any time soon.

all games will be built to run around what i have now so im happy with that. hopfully by this time next year i will be 100% linux at my office, and only use M$ for gaming at the house.

It's hard not to be familiar with Windows these days. Even if you're a heavy Linux or Mac person, odds are there's somewhere you go where your only option is Windows. I have to use it at college, for example, to print out essays and presentations(which I created in OpenOffice of course :) ).

Being a Windows refugee, I still retain much of my former knowledge. The knowledge is nice, but it comes with the nightmares. I wouldn't mind some day if they both faded away. I may be able to answer many questions about 9x through XP, but like Pcghost said, I hope nobody comes asking me about "Shorthorn." :p

from what I hear, NT will be a prety big rewrite from the original NT, one thing I look foward to is windows introducing compatibity with IPv6. the question is how well will it be adopted by the ISP's. Cause I know that they'll want to cater to the pre-longhorn crowd that will be 90% of computers till a long time after it comes out.

I don't know my way around NT based systems. I could do just about anything in 98SE, but I got sick of that, and switched to Linux. Never have had a chance to mess around with XP for an extended period of time, although the two times I have had to help someone do something in XP, I was able to figure it out after a few minutes of clicking around.

recently i tried to setup windowsXP for my parents...

and i didnt have a CLUE !

most of the windows2k drivers were not compatable with windowsXP
especially my windows modem (motorola sm56)

so i went to motorola's home-page, used the search function to find the drivers page,
located the SAME driver that works under 2k, but clicked the windowsXP link instead of 2K.

downloaded the driver, booted XP.
XP said that the driver had been digitally sgned by MS's compatability team,
both windows and myself agreed that the driver was a match for my modem...
product ID's matched and everything.

the installation went fine, it said i needed to reboot (whats all that about?)
on rebooting...... "ERROR CODE 10"

so i look up error code 10.... and error code 10 means.....[quote]This device could not be started because it is not plugged it, or is not functioning correctly[/quote[

when my windows modem didnt work in linux, i got a REAL error message....
compile error variable type mismatch in serial_core.c line 1073 included from whaterver.h

with an error message like that i was able to correct the error, and boom, i fixed it...

but with the error message.. "Dude.... it dont work" well.... what can you do ?

LOL, why are they even reporting a error that says your machine is not plugged in?, if it weren't plugged in then it would be at the error in the first place ...

almost as bad as some errors that say your mouse is broken and wont work, and they still ask you to click "ok"

lol... when it said not plugged in... i think its refering to the modem not being sat in the pci slot :p

but it IS a stupid error message.
error messages should guve clues as to what is wrong so the user can fix it.. not state the obviouse...

that would be like having a light on your cars dash board that lights up to remind you that you are not sat in the drivers seat..... just incase you try going through the motions and wonder where the pedals have gone, and why the steering feels lighter.

Uh... once you start it, you're already an expert. Unless you like hacking the registry or changing files in you %systemroot% file, there ain't much else for you to do.

You know, this is the most important difference between Linux and windows. When everything is OK, then they are both user-friendly desktop OSes with lots of applications. But when something goes wrong, then you can do almost nothing in windows, while in Linux you can spend almost infinite long times searching for a solution, which is very likely to exist somewhere.

So, as a windows user, you can only hope that M$ has done its work well, so that no problems occur. As a Linux user, you also hope that no problems occur, but IF they occur, then there's even more hope: you can hope that you are able to fix the problem (and in a simple/quick way)
