just a happening

Hi, well, I was at home using mandrake 8.2 when one of my sisters friends came, well, she saw that it wasn't windows, she never had seen something different.

-What is that?-mandrake-linux
-?? what?- well, windows is a O.S, and this is another one
stoned face- there's something else that isn't windows!?!?
-where is the outlook here? -erm...
-and the explorer?-well, there are some...
-some what?, some explorers?-some web browsers...
-??..., where is the explorer?

I opened netscape

-this doesn't work, looks different-cause it IS different, you're trying to get to your account in hotmail pressing enter, and in netscape you have to click.

and more, and more questions and sentences like (this doesn't work, why do you say it is better!?!?, etc)...

Well, I just mean that there is not information outthere about linux, and if someone knows something, they think that it is difficult to use, without even trying it.

The mass media and microsoft have done their job very well, most people think that computers work only with windows-xx.

There's still a lot of work to do.

I find the best defense is layed out in stuff like the Linux Advocacy mini-HOWTO. Really helps prep for combatting MTD's (that's Micro soft Transmitted Diseases).

Btw, isn't it time you translated that basque sig? :-]

aizkorri 11-18-2002 11:11 AM

Ok, ok, thanks for the link,

And well, this is an aproximated translation of my signature, sorry, my english is not the best:

A language is not lost because the ones who don't know how to speak it don't learn it, it is lost because the ones who can speak it don't use it.
Artze is the one who wrote the sentence.

It doesn't sound as well as in basque.
If someone writes a sentence with the same meaning but in a proper english I will add it to my sig.
thnx.

That's why I never say that this OS is better than this "unfinished, crappy, put-together-from-stolen-code software", when a friend of mine (not a computer lieterate) saw Enlightenment running on my box he said:"I know how you'd done it, you deleted all the icons and took a screenshot, I heard it you can do it with computers, and made it your screen" - author's edit: wallpaper, I just said: "It is much simplier than that, no need to fool people...".

Yep they do need to start having ads for linux

bubba169 11-18-2002 03:36 PM

Yeah people don't realize that Windows or MS is fairly young and that UNIX has been around for quite awhile. It seems to me that most people think that there are only Windows & Macs out there (and some think that a Mac is a version of Windows), I feel that this due to MS controlling the press. I tried Linux back in April of 2002 and since then I have told everyone I could about it and I get alot of "What is Linux?" questions then they misunderstand the "FREE" part. MS has done a good job with their marketing crap and creating a monopoly of the market but one day they will fall.

I would say that your translation is 99% fine!
A language is not lost because those that do not know how to speak it do not learn it, it is lost because those that can, do not use it.

Hi,
Thanks Thymox, I added the english version to my signature,
well, 99% fine..., everyone can understand what my sentence means but your version of the translation sounds better.
Here it is.

Thymox 11-20-2002 11:44 AM

:D

I guess I cheated: one of my housemates (my bro's girlfriend) is Basque and she has very good English, so I got her to translate it for me a long time ago (well, when I first read it in your sig) :D

aizkorri 11-20-2002 12:08 PM

you... :D,
ha, ha, ha, we are all over the world!. Say "kaixo"=hello to her from me.
Well, anyway I heard that there are a lot of foreigners in Devon, and there are also basques among them as I see.
Agur.
