job prospects after a degree....

G'day.....just a question for any of you who went to college/university and did an IT degree. What were your job prospects like when you came out?? ....Did you find good work right away? ....pay decent? etc, etc.

I've got one year left of my degree....just wonder what to expect then I'm out in the big bad world! Cheers!!

I just finished studying a diploma of IT (networking) at Russo Institute of Technology (early - mid june 2002).

I am now working as a system support analysist in the computer services department of hamilton Island. I'm in my third week here, and loving the lifestyle.

I don't know what city you live in, but i came from Brisbane. and the job prospects sucked there. as soon as this job came up i went for it and well. here i am.

It's hard to tell what the industry will be like when you have finished, but work at it and you will get there, sometimes you have to sacrifice something to eventually get what you want.

Started up recently doing .NET stuff after getting an MSc in Birmingham. Don't be too concerned with pay in your first job - we work with consultants (whom I have slagged off on this board) who are on serious money and most of them are agreed that with two years experience consultancy is nearly assured.

I am a .NET convert though. It uses an open network object model and as mono developers can testify, it's on it's way for Linux. I am too pragmatic to be concerned with where it came from. I just don't care.

I am not religious about OS's (anymore?) and really not many people can afford to be. Keep an open mind, a keen eye and a spring in your step, young Skywalker and Tatooine will all be yours one day!

Dont let my comments put you off. I just could take a while to find that job that you love, if you really want one it will happen.

Use as many of the job networks as you can, it will make your life easier.

so....was the IT scene really that bad in Brisbane?

Bert 09-02-2002 06:24 PM

No, that's nothing to do with Brisbane, that's just life.
