Is there any "Open mail" providers?

Is there any open and trusted (non-profit maybe?) email service provider that (with a small fee) can give me an e-mail account that I can access through a web interface? I don't have a stable Internet connection and I want to access my e-mails from any pc. And I don't trust google.

hushmal is .com

My concern is about what happens when hushmail goes bankrupt or it decides to sell its customers to an other company.

Nobody had these concerns before?

Does seems a little paranoid.

If you don't want to use one of the big providers like gmail, yahoo, MS live then you could look some of the companies that host domains.

I have used 1and1.co.uk for years for an email account. That type of company will provide lots of options - but will charge.

The good thing being if there are problems in the future you take your domain and therefore email accounts with you.

Please explain this to me a little more: If i purchase a domain name, I can have email connected to this domain, and so have legal control over it?

It was a while since I set mine up, but I think it goes like this.

You buy and register a domain name, and usually this is done via a company that will host the domain. Then they can provide email accounts for that.

E.g.you buy www.mydomain.com, then you can set up pretty much any email account with that address:

something@mydomain.com

You have to pay the hosting company a fee (not a lot), and they will usually pay the company that has the domain registered.

So as you own www.mydomain.com provided you keep paying the registration
company, you can change the company that hosts it and provides your email if you wanted to.

often there are cheaper domains than .com e.g. in the uk co.uk
Someone correct me if I am wrong - but that is my understanding.

Adding to what tur third wrote ...

Historically ISPs have delayed long over releasing DNS control so it makes perfect sense to register the domain (and set the authoritative DNS servers) with one company and have the hosting done by another. IDK about "and they will usually pay the company that has the domain registered" but it seems improbable and is anyway invisible to us and outside our control.

If you own mydomain.com then you do not (normally?) need to set up specific addresses such as something@mydomain.com; everything@mydomain.com can be delivered to you.

Historically .co.uk names were more expensive than .com names; it may not be the case now.

@nickkefi: at one time there were many free and good mail service providers (ESPs) in the scramble to "get the people" with the idea that having the people would be a valuable business asset in the log run, for the income from advertisers and to sell further services including "premium" email. For the small ESPs the model was not sustainable and they have progressively disappeared from the scene. If you do not want to subscribe to any of the remaining big free ESPs and you do want a long term subscription then you will be very lucky to find a free service. The quality of service from paid ESPs (who typically provide other ISP services such as web hosting) is usually closely related to price -- you get what you pay for. As a heavy user of ISP services, 7 years ago I chose LuxSci.com and have had excellent availability and technical support -- for a higher than average monthly payment.

Hrmmm if only somebody made a non profit, open source, secure anti-datatracking webmail service that only worked on linux (meaning it checks the agent string during registration only ;P)
