Is $ony trying to repent with the PS4, or just increase PR hype ?

Sony has not only promised that the PS4 will support used games without an online connection, they trolled the Xbox folks hard with this Official PlayStation Used Game Instructional Video.
...
The Verge covers how Sony has crafted policies explicitly to make the PS4 consumer friendly to the public. They make the case that the PS4 will be superior in nearly every way [to the Xbox Next] by not requiring an Internet connection, not restricting used games, supporting indie developers and selling for $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.
There is small print in that video that says it only applies to disk-based games, and that multi-player still requires a PSN account and PS Plus subscription. However, this is the same as the PS3.

I would consider buying one, but what $ony did on the PS3 was not good. I think it is just PR hype directed against their competition, and rightly so. I suppose I'll keep an eye on it.

Given that and seeing the now revealed price-tags (499$ XBox One, 399$ PS4) I would opt for the PS4 also, if I would be in console gaming. Seems like Sony has finally learned something from the mistakes of the past. I see bad days for Microsoft, especially Ballmer:
- Windows 8 -> failed
- XBox One -> failed, at least presumably
Can't wait to see the next Office version and if it is a fail also.

"The new Oddworld game New 'n' Tasty is coming to every platform in the current generation and even the next generation but not the Xbox One. It's not that developer Oddworld Inhabitants isn't porting the game. It's not that they hate Microsoft or the Xbox One. No, it's that Microsoft has taken an anti-indie dev stance with the Xbox One. While the game industry is moving to Kickstarter and self-funded shops, Microsoft has decided all developers must have a publisher to grace their console."
This happens to be one of the games that I was going to buy for the PS4. I was never thinking about buying an Xbox One, not after my Xbox 360 got the red right of death. Now I won't buy one even if they put a gun to my head.

At least the contrast between the Xbox One and PS4 will make people choose one over the other.

Reading on the net, compared to xbox, PS4 sounds better as price and quality.
I think to buy one. But i want to wait for more details and news.

I will certainly wait for game reviews and read the EULA, etc. The PS3 has became infamous for lots of crappy games. Of the ones I bought over 50% are worthless.

Sony marketing people can smell blood and are just taking advantage of a major misstep their competitor has made. It'll take more than not being quite as bad as the other guy this time to make me believe they've changed their spots.

No thank you... I'll pass on both products. "Fool me once, shame on you..." and all that.

It kinda already is, with that Office 360 thing that works like Google Docs. MS seriously overestimated the demand on that one.

I'll probably pass on the PS4 as well depending on certain things. I do think that they are doing this only to take advantage of the competition, like you said. As soon as the Xbox One fails, they'll go back to being draconian.

considering $ony's track record, I'd take the ps4 with a grain of salt, as a matter of fact with the way PC's are headed I'd wonder why anyone should buy a game console, especially when you can use a TV as a monitor for a PC and buy console style controllers for a PC, and a PC can double as a media center as well as a gaming machine.

H_TeXMeX_H 06-18-2013 01:17 PM

Consoles are considerably cheaper for the power of the hardware ... but there is the limit that it's not a PC. They are ideal for clusters such as the large PS3 cluster used to break SSL encryption not long ago.

jefro 06-18-2013 09:05 PM

Their real money is in making you pay for games.

Shame they locked any other OS out both legally and electronically.
