Did anyone see this article about how Microsoft is only successful because of Windows?

According to this, Microsoft is an excellent example of a company that makes one highly successful product (Windows) and nothing comparably successful afterward.

and they use well established tricks of the trade to monopolize the economy as best they can, so that the only product on any shelf is a windows product, so that even though it sucks, and leaves much to be desired, there ain't anything else to choose from that is as easy, and thoughtless a process as buying a windows box.

Windows successfully bored a hole through the membrane of the main stream, and allowed a bidirectional feed of resources to continuously pump resources to and fro.

A good little helper organism for insanity.

Well, I reluctantly accept the author's arguments and add my own. Besides that Microsoft's existence helps sustain the national economy and several local and regional economies, I would not want Microsoft to be gone tomorrow. The economy is struggling enough already to absorb the destruction of a successful major corporation, regardless of whether the coproration peddles junk. I wouldn't have minded seeing it die a few years ago, though.

You're saying, had you known microsoft would be the omnipotent entity that it is you would have nixed it, but now that it grew into a core organ of our society, you wish to keep it?

That's awfully rude. Like saying to someone growing up, "Ahh, you're so annoying! I don't want anything to do with you." then magically changing your mind as soon as that persons net worth exceeds the price of the city you live in... I mean, that's normal, but rude..

But about the Blll and Melinda Gates Foundation. It gives more aid to India compared to Africa. The reason being that aid is proportional to market share (outside of the US that is).

In that metaphor, I am treating a corporation as a person. It's not. And what I'm doing is acknowledging that if Microsoft disappeared, the economy would suffer, and it's already suffering.
