Installing software on Mac OS X

When user installes a program on Mac OS X, is it like installing some portable program on Windows? No dependencies, no registry entries, no home direcrory files; all the programs needs is in its directory? Nothing is outside?

What is de definition of a user under OSX who can install a program .
Meaning what privilege did that user have.
Ok most program under OSX can be install by dragging it into the app folder but not all apps can be installed in that way .
And please do not compare Windows with OS X .
They are two totally different OS , who has nothing in common.

From what I can see, 90% of mac applications are stored in a self contained format. For example, at school I can't install spotify or audacity, but if I simply double click on the .dmg file I can still run it.

mac is bsdi based. so any self-contained hello-world program would work.

but anything that depends on shared-objects wouldnt be as portable

just like linux, windows, sun os, ...
