In search of a good general ICT/computer science forum
I am looking for a forum or discussion group to discuss any and all ICT or computer science topics, perhaps a student forum. I don't have any special training in computer science, although I've done a little more reading and experimenting than the average person: I've recently installed FC6 (Linux) on my laptop, I'm learning the command line and have just begun learning some C++. I'm hoping to start my first year of university in computer science in September and I'm trying to learn the basics, to get a head start beforehand. For the time being, I'm not sure which branch of ICT interests me the most, but what's certain is that if or when I dodecide to specialise in a particular branch of computer science, I would like to know the basics of all facets of the computer world (I've met programmers who don't even know how to use basic MS Word functionalities or basic Windows configuration. Nothing against that, to each his own, some people like programming and nothing else. Some people are allergic to Windows and MS! I've no problem with that! However, in the end, I would like to be able to answer any basic or general question concerning ICT).
I'm looking for a forum that might help me get information on what I need to know (computer maths, networks, computer architecture, etc.), a discussion group whose members would be familiar with the best written material on the subjects, books and sites with clear explanations and logical progressions, etc. Lastly, a forum in which most members are students in computer science or people who take a keen interest in ICT. I think I'm off to a good start, but, basically, I'd like to be doing what first and second year computer science majors are doing and to have the possibility to dialogue with people who share similar objectives.
This forum is excellent for Linux problems and questions. What would be ideal is a similar forum for ICT or computer science in general.
If you have a few suggestions, perhaps you could drop me a line or two.
Many thanks
