Improving Pastebin

I'm sure many of you have used pastebin.

http://pastebin.com/

It's a great tool for pulishing some code or text for a short period of time. The link can then be put in an IRC channel for people to look at and edit. There are some features that I think are missing from many pastebin sites however. First, you cannot login and view previous posts (kinda like a forum). You can't save to PDF or email the code to yourself. You can't bookmark other people's code (unless you use browser bookmarks). With some you cannot upload a file. You cannot add notes to a correction. These are just some of the ideas that I came up with.

If you could build the perfect pastebin, what would it have?

I'd make just like linuxquestions.org, except with a section dedicated to programming. But I think we have that already.

In fact, it seems to hold very well on its own. It could probably actually compete with other sites dedicated to programming.

But definately not with sourceforge. You'd probably be interested in that.

New Open Source Pastebin Project started

Hi guys,
Well I wanted to start improving on the pastebin model and have started on this. So if anyone is interested in getting involved please come along to the project homepage an post feature requests/bugs and patches etc..

Currently implemented code is based upon the pastebin.com codebase with some newer features. But I'm not sure if the code needs a lot of re-factoring.

Current HEAD site is running at http://1t2.us/
Current TRUNK site is running at http://paste.f-box.org/

Project homepage at http://launchpad.net/pastebin-ng/

Cheers,
DanB UK.

Hi!

I was thinking saving to PDF would be really useful using this:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdf-php

I think bookmarks would be another really useful feature so you can save other people's code.

Here's the list that I have come up with so far. I don't know if these have been implemented or not. Some of the ideas probably aren't very good or necessary but eh...

-Add notes/message to correction
-Email user password if they forgot
-Login and extend the life of a previous post
-Ability to upload a file
-Spam control, maybe just enter a number and do a simple cipher like adding one to make sure the hidden field isn't being used
-Show the number of views per post
-Show statistics on database usage and total stats
-Translations to other languages
-Email code to user (potential spam issues here)

I'm pretty busy this week but I'll see if I can get some time this weekend to look at the code. :)

Not quite sure on that usage model. But I'll add it to the features list for work.

I will add all of these to the features page on Launchpad. Once I have completed you can see them all here.

No problem. I'll see how bored/lazy I get at work.

Cheers,
Dan.
